Alabama coach Avery Johnson expects to add a player to the Tide's roster next week, he said Tuesday at the SEC meetings in Destin, Florida.
Johnson did not name the player.
"We'll have an announcement next week about adding somebody else to the roster," Johnson said. "We just need to get through this period. And once we get through this period, you'll start to hear a lot more from us next week."
The player could be Johnson's son, Avery Johnson Jr., who received his release from Texas A&M May 8.
Emphasizing that he was speaking as Johnson Jr.'s father — not as a coach — Johnson said his son will take an official visit to Alabama next week.
A guard, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound Johnson Jr. averaged 1.4 points per game as a freshman at Texas A&M last season.
Rated by 247Sports as a three-star prospect and the 56th-best point guard in his class, Johnson Jr. averaged 15 points and four rebounds as a senior at Plano West High School in Texas while helping his team win a district championship.

Two things here;

1. Avery Jr. coming is old news.

2. Avery indicated when he took the job that we would have the full quota of scholarship players for next season, 13. By my reckoning we now have eleven on scholarship, including Avery Jr.

I believe the dead period ends today. So, hearing something in the next few days makes sense.

Stories are circulating about the assistant coach position being filled as well.
