Depends on one's definition of consensus. Mine would be any year with five or more listings by the various organizations that named a NC. This link shows all years that any organization named Bama NC. Based om my definition of consensus, Bama would have 12. However it would not be the 12 that the school claims. It would drop 1941, which is a joke to claim, and it would add 1966, which absolutely should not be left off ANY list of Bama NC's.

Consensus doesn't really matter to me because of the flaws in the polls, especially those in the early days of football. The final polls occurred after the bowl season, most of them had severe regional bias (i.e. the exclusion of Bama in 66' in favor of lesser record ND and MSU), and the fact that there were so many of them. If consensus did matter, we would only have 3 and everyone else would have much less than their count too. Good thing it doesn't because Aubie would then be able to claim their 2004 Golf Digest crown.

To me, a consensus title would mean that both the Coaches' Poll and the AP agreed on who was the champion. Before these polls came into existence, champions were named, based on whatever the criteria of the day was. Since 1998, the BCS system has named the NC, no matter what Southern Cal says.
Any championship after 1950 (when the UP/Coaches' Poll began) that does not include both the AP and Coaches' Polls can't be considered consensus. We had at least three such titles during Coach Bryant's tenure.
Bama's claiming a title in 1966, although well-deserved, would be like Auburn claiming the People's National Championship in 2004.
That said, I'll say Bama has 8 consensus championships and 3 split titles.

In fairness to our neighbors at the cow college across the state, they were (shock) on probation in 1957. As I recall the UPI excluded them from NC consideration because of that. API would probably have been a near unanimous national champ except for the probation.
As far as ours go, we were consensus in 1961. In 1964 it was decided that the NC would be selected before the bowls. We were undefeated and won that year even though we lost to Texas in the Orange Bowl. (Namath still swears that he scored in the 4th quarter and we actually won.) In 1965 the powers that be decided to have their final poll after the bowls. We had a loss to Georgia on a controversial play and a tie with Tennessee and weren't really thinking NC going into the bowls. We were ranked 4th going in but thrashed Nebraska and everyone ahead of us lost, so we won it all in 1965 as well. Everyone knows we were shafted in 1966. That team was better than either 1964 or 1965. The 1978 team was 11-1 and USC tried to claim a share of it, but the pollsters gave it to us, and the 1979 team ran the table to win it all again. 1992 was a consensus NC as well, which gives us six in this era. I think that the school still claims 1973, but not too strongly. The other NCs that we claim go back to the earlier era of the game, when often the winner of the Rose Bowl was considered the champion.
