🏈 Meaningless bowl games? You aren't a football fan, just a Bama fan.

Meaningless to me. I only ever cared about the one Alabama's in.

They're going to shove a 12 team playoff down our throats as a way to keep people interested.

My opinion here, college football is in trouble. They're doing everything they can to ruin it.
Then those 12 games won't be meaningless!! So we will have less stay away from there teammates,

I have lost interest this year due to the cancelations. It shows me there is more behind the scenes than football. And I mean that politically. What A&M and UCLA did has irked a lot of others, in college football that is.

All in all, I love bowl season. The Purdue/Tennessee game was a ton of fun to watch. The Ole Miss/Baylor game will hopefully be good. A hungry Utah team beating a selfish Ohio State team will be good. Georgia/Michigan will be good. Seeing South Carolina beat all odds and finish strong against a Pre-Season Top 10 team and Pre-Season Heisman Quaterback was nice.

Remember, most of these guys will never ever play again. I remember my last game/games/season/snaps/career, and I cherish it all, so I don't see one more opportunity as pointless.

I love the bowl season and pull for all the SEC teams. This year has been a little disappointing with the lack of performance from our SEC brethren except South Carolina so far. Today I hope Bama and Georgia open a can on UC and UM. This year, I have watched a lot of bowl action.

All that is left is LSU-Kansas State and then of course, the big game. Then the NFL postseason kicks in. Some bowl games are hard to get pumped for. The best ones this season got cancelled due to "Covid". I would rather catch a "meaningless" bowl game than pathetically count down the days to next football season...in January...even before the national championship game is played. Now, I have no problem with a countdown to football season, if it's like June-July. But NOT in January. That's kind of sad. Granted, I place a tad too much emphasis on Bama football. But, I have never started a countdown to the next football season in January LOL

Ok. I think " meaningless" means different things to different people. Doesn't mean totally worthless

When i... 50+... refers to that. I come from here

These teams start with a goal of getting to... and some winning...CFP...

If the game you play in... doesnt future that goal.... then i refer to it as " meaningless "
... as to trying to reach ur overall objective....

A bowl game does not futher that goal!
Therefore... it is meaningless in that season because it does not help in achieving the goal of being in the CFps or being CF NCs. Same as the NIT bball tournament. Which is essentially a basketball bowl game/tournament

I think there some that have Different meaning that collide with this.
But thats mine

This right here. Money ruins everything. I got into an argument with a Vols fan recently when I stated that a 12 game playoff will ruin the regular season of college football.

I'll be honest, I preferred the BCS to what we have now. Hell, I would even argue that I would prefer the post season model prior to the BCS to what we have now.

Today's game feels so....stale. Maybe I would feel differently if Alabama wasn't so dominant. Can any old timers relate? Did the fanbase become less fanatic in the late 70s/early 80s under Bryant?

I want to preface this by saying I do not want an expanded Playoff. There has not been a year where four teams have shown they were of a Championship caliber.

That being said, I think the only way to save college football is to have a larger Playoff. We do not have opt-outs for Playoff teams. So I think the only way we keep a competitive bowl season is to have more teams with a path to a title and therefor more players will play instead of opt-out. I hate paying players. Money ruins everything and I have stood by that for years. Now look where we are.

Remember, they told us players should get paid, players should be able to transfer (coaches can leave), players should be able to commit earlier, and players should think about their future potential into consideration.

Where have each of those decisions landed?

Hard for me to remember back that far lol but I do recall expecting Bama to win.

@TideatMileHigh

CF was mid high in 60s n 70s i would say....
1 or 2 games on Saturday ....not always SEC teams
Some prime time games..not many

No espn.....most all white ...predominantly anyway....bigger in South-than elsewhere....big 10....sEC....pac12...big 8...SEC scoffed at....

Pretty regional stuff..BEAR was well known...as was Namath...

Bama, Tennessee, Auburn....LSU...

Not as fanatical....supportive though...

No internet...No forums....so wasnt much inter regional mixing...sports illustrated was the bible .

Bowl games was a goal for teams...and there was inter conference competition
Ap and UPI named national champions some before bowls..some after

Stadiums were smaller...in the south..tickets were hard to get..

Way I remember some

Through 60s...early 70s...things started to change in late 70s
.

A lot of what 50+ posted applied well into the 90's. The 1992 NC run saw Bama on ABC five times, ESPN once, and Jefferson-Pilot twice. Five games were on PPV only. Ten years earlier, in 1982, Bama was on TV a total of 3 times including the Bowl that was on MediaSports so probably just regional. Radio was huge for us back then.

One thing to remember is the NCAA controlled broadcasting until 1984. They originally only allowed one national game per week then changed it to 8 national games a week and regional only during 5 weeks of the season. That changed in 1984 when Oklahoma and UGA won their lawsuit against the NCAA.
