šŸˆ Meaningless bowl games? You aren't a football fan, just a Bama fan.

A lot of what 50+ posted applied well into the 90's. The 1992 NC run saw Bama on ABC five times, ESPN once, and Jefferson-Pilot twice. Five games were on PPV only. Ten years earlier, in 1982, Bama was on TV a total of 3 times including the Bowl that was on MediaSports so probably just regional. Radio was huge for us back then.

One thing to remember is the NCAA controlled broadcasting until 1984. They originally only allowed one national game per week then changed it to 8 national games a week and regional only during 5 weeks of the season. That changed in 1984 when Oklahoma and UGA won their lawsuit against the NCAA.

Yep. Didnt us older guys love games on radio!!!!! My dad had a radio in his bedroom and we listened to a many games

Every thing wasnt sponsored by something either. A first down was just a first down
Not a first down sponsored by some bank with hours on Saturday and a haircut because it feels great

Come to think of it. The last bama game i didnt see was in 2000 something because it was only on ppv and wasnt allowed viewing in Tennessee because the Vols were on at the same time

A&M just broke the 247 Composite class score record Bama set last year and they’re not done yet. In my opinion that would not have happened without NIL. It’s not like they’re getting a NC bounce or even an SEC Championship bounce. Jimbo and his current players haven’t done anything to inspire this kind of record breaking recruiting class. And it’s not the case that the State of Texas had a record number of top recruits that Jimbo and his staff signed which accounts for this historic class. A&M signed top players from Texas but also from Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Louisiana and Sweden! That’s what Saban, Day and Smart did before NIL but not Jimbo. So, what has changed? NIL … that’s what and with the mounds of money available from A&M alumni/supporters there’s no telling what kinds of deals these recruits have been promised. And sadly, buying players is totally legal now … thanks to the Courts and Congress. The powers that be are ruining what was the greatest sport in America just as fast as they can.

Yup. TAMU has some of the deepest pockets in college football. Just look at how quickly they raised money for the stadium and how much extra they got.

Combine that with a lack of a meaningful trophy and you get their current dilemma.

They have a few years to distance themselves from Texas before the rent comes due. Texas owns them...they know it.

Texas fan's certainly believe that! It's a crazy relationship there...Because historically Texas has always been big brother, but they've been so bad in recent years and TAMU has been able to play the "SEC" card, so there's been some egg on the face recently. I'm actually looking forward to seeing that rivalry pick back up!

In regard to TAMU and their near future - Culture typically wins. Not sure the overall foundation is in place to keep all those dudes happy. Ole Miss had it rolling for a minute also... Burned to flames soon after! Jimbo has proven he can win the big one, but the future success isn't guaranteed with that talent. Sometimes it creates MORE problems than it solves. Until CNS leaves, I suspect they'll be humbled from here until his retirement with the extra motivation this year's game will bring.

I know that what they propose will never happen, but it makes more sense than the consolidation we have now. Take the conferences back to small conferences where all teams can play each other every year. Get rid of the Conference Championships and add more good non-conference games. Then add a plus one after the bowls. If they want to stop certain teams from dominating that is the best method. Not sure it would stop Bama right now, but it sure would make things more interesting for every team.
