🏈 Marcell Dareus to miss 2 games, per ruling just now from the NCAA

When I saw the fine, I thought to myself, "You know, I work and I don't live hand to mouth, but that would be a hit right there." When I was in college, and on scholarship, I didn't make extra due to other benefits. I could not have paid the fine, and my parents could not and would not have helped me. I guess I would have been out.

Many college kids who are from families qualifying for Pell Grants have extra money this time of year. Some of my middle son's friends have received "refunds" from the school representing grants in excess of their tuition, room and board for general expenses. Some of the amounts were over $2,000.

Dude, read what's been posted...

When you break it down, this really amounts to a 1 game suspension. Marcel would not have played that much tomorrow night anyway. He will be slightly missed next week vs Penn State. He will need to play at least a half in the Duke game so that he will have at least some game time under his belt heading in to Arkansas the next week. His pass rushing will be needed in that one.

I think you'll be surprised how deep into the game you see starting linemen on the field this weekend. I also believe having the NC MVP out of your lineup against a team ranked no. 14 in the nation is more than "slightly missed".

The NCAA has a payment plan set up for those that do not have the money already set aside. I hate it for Marcel and the team but as stated earlier, it could've been worse. I think the 2nd trip that came out may have been the one to get him the suspension.

I don't feel sorry for Marcell, I do feel for his teammates. These guys are taught the ANYTHING that seems to be a benefit of any kind needs to be checked out by the compliance office beforehand. Selfishness is the only word I can think of to describe these actions by any player who puts his team in a predicament like this, not excluding Bama guys.

If he had to be suspended I view this as a best-case scenario for you guys. He certainly isn't needed against SJSU and I don't think he will be missed against a true freshman QB from Penn State. Penn State has a great o-line in spots but the loss of Dareus won't hurt you guys that much.

It could've been a lot worse. It seems there is no consistency with the NCAA. I've heard of others getting much longer suspensions and some getting less. It would be nice to have a formalized set of consequences. I would settle for some urgency by the NCAA. With Dareus' and Masoli's situation both--waiting until a week or in your case, two days before your opener, is absolutely insane.

For the starting linemen staying in late in the game, it is a matter of conditioning and repitition. Giving the chance for the backup skill guys to have some success is vital to boosting their confidence if they are called upon early due to an injury rather than "scrub time". The back up linemen will roll in for a series or two in the first half and then won't get back in til late in the game.

Just watch a local high school football game and you will definitely notice when the starters come out. They will have to burn a time out because they can't find someone, then they will commit 2 false start penalties, then follow that up with a turnover or 3 plays of negative yards, and a punt.

Someone explain the appeals part to me please. If they appeal, he still has to miss games until the appeal is heard, doesn't he? If they wait until after the second game to hear the case (assuming they even get to it by then), he has still served the suspension part of the punishment so it becomes a matter of whether he has to pay the fine or not. Is that correct or am I missing something?

As I understand it the only thing we are appealing is the length of the suspension. Obviously if the appeal isn't ruled on until after the Penn State game the issue is moot. I have some hope in that the NCAA has already issued a favorable ruling on Masoli's appeal in what for them is record breaking speed we have a chance of getting a timely ruling.

Thanks Joe. I guess we sit and wait on the NCAA...again. :-)
