Well I can tell you that our "Tampa Buccs" defense doesnt come from the hands of Gruden. It comes from our Defense Coach Monte Kiffin. He has been with the organization since 96 I think. He would make a great head coach as he has been before.

Interesting you mention Monte...

One of the rumors coming out of Clemson is Lane has been contacted, but part of his "deal" is he has to bring Monte with him.

Mike Leach is making 1.74MM. He could easily double his salary, add having a home stadium that seat 100K+ to his recruiting toolbox.

With Leach being 47 years old (young-ish), being respected nationally an Offensive genius, and only making 1.75MM at a mid level Big 12 school, I would UT would be making some calls to the man. True TTU will have to come up with more money, but can they really compete with UT?

Here's what continues to puzzle me about Leach at TN.

We all know his personality is, well, quirky.

We also know that at UT you have to be able to recruit across the nation, be one of those "living room" guys.

Despite his offense, I wonder if he has that ability. Personally, I just don't see it as a fit in the recruiting wars of the SEC.

My son has friends that attend ut, and two of them who are ardent football fans saw Bill Cowher LAST WEEKEND. They saw him not once but twice!

One of those things that kind of makes you want to go hmmmmm...

No how, no way. Nope. Not gonna happen.

Yeah, I remember when people were saying that about us getting Saban.

Yeah, and I remember when Nick Saban was a college coach who decided to try his hand at the NFL, hated it, then came back to his first love. Yeah, it's really the same thing.

BTW, Cowher turned down his alma mater. I doubt it was to hold out for a college job.

I'm not saying it's gonna happen, I don't think there's a chance in hell... just saying, people said the SAME THING about Saban. ^^STU

Yeah, but still, Saban is a college guy. His whole career is rooted in college football. Cowher has been in the pros so long and doesn't seem to have any desire whatsoever to coach in college, so that is the major difference between the two.

Cowher never has coached a down in college football.

Lenny was close to being right when he said "apples and oranges." Fact is, it's further apart than that.

I popped in over on the volnation and read that the rumor is Gruden from Tampa Bay.

Woody Paige on Around the Horn said he guaranteed it would be Gruden. Take that for what it is, but he(Woody) is a Tennessee alum and he said he talked to some of his connections at the University so who knows?

For what it's worth, I don't see Muschamp leaving Texas just yet. I think he was given the fast track to taking over Texas after Mack Brown. Even though Will played at Georgia, I think he will want to separate himself from the conference where he was an assistant for two programs. I think Leach would be a good fit and would take it if offered, but Gruden is the most likely. Either way, I'd give both of our co-defensive coordinators plus four recruits to get Will Muschamp back to LSU.

I heard that one too and the word on that one from Nashville sports radio is that Gruden has perfect coaching conditions in Tampa and ownership has no intention of letting him walk.

There's a big difference between the likes of Gruden, Cowher and Saban. Nothing against Saban -- but Super Bowl Champion Head Coaches do not leave the NFL to coach college football.

Cowher has ties to western North Carolina (his wife has family there?) and close proximity to Knoxville might be alluring. With Saban at Bama no hire really concerns me at this point. Living in Tennessee is the only thing that even makes the topic of conversation remotely interesting. I have to admit I'm relishing in their angst though. It's long overdue.

Didn't he turn down the N.C. State coaching job already? You would think that he would have gone home if he wanted to coach in the college ranks.

I dont think he has that kinda pull with Monte. Monte was there back when Tony Dungy was coaching. I think Monte is happy there and I think the owners are happy having him there. He is a mastermind when it comes to defense. If he leaves I think it would only be for a HeadCoach job. If that would even pull him out. Hes getting up there in the age and has been living in Florida a long time now. But who knows what money will do for you.

That's one of the reasons I used the term "rumors" instead of "story" coming out of Clemson. :D

One thing that hasn't been mentioned in this thread, that probably bears considering, is the Tampa ownership isn't known for easily letting their staff out of their contracts. That would apply to Gruden specifically, and Monte since I brought him in the picture.

The Tampa owners are the the same owners of the Manchester United (soccer) team, thus they know know to take care of their people and have money to play the game. They can not be considered in the same league as some University trying to keep their coach. Further, I don't think they are unhappy with Coach Chucky. As for Monty, the guy looks old enough to make you suspect that he will not be interested in starting all over. Heck his Defense is named for Tampa (Tampa two). Gruden just does not add up to me.

Gruden would not be a good college fit. The reason is because he is not the type to play the father/mentor/shepherd role that a college head coach must be able to do. This is not an easy role in itself (see Fulmer, Shula, every Miami Coach). If the decision makers see it like me, Gruden becomes a concern considering their sustained pattern of trouble.

I didn't know they were involved with Manchester. Interesting considering I assume Manchester has a lot of success as a organization based on how often I hear the name.

Based on my limited knowledge of Gruden, you and I feel the same. He just doesn't seem like a "college fit."

Here's your 6 degrees of separation for the day.

The only reason I knew of Gruden and his college experiences comes from Sherrill coaching at Pitt, Mark Gottfried playing at Bama and then wondering if Mike Gottfried (who also coached at Pitt) were related. When Mike was fired and they hired Hackett I first saw his name...and, a lot of that had to do with our hiring of Stallings and I was wondering how Penn State was doing since they were making a decent run in '91.

Gruden stuck out because he was about my age...

Anyway...not a lot of experience there when it comes to college football and demanding positions.

My best guess would be that Leach will leave TTU and go to UT. My reasons being:
1- money money money
2- TTU will never be on the level of Texas or aTm. At best they'll be the number 3 program in the state. At UT he'll be at one of the top 5 programs (exposure wise) in the nation.
3- At UT Leach can know he will always have the recruiting budget and tools he needs, top knotch weight room, locker room, dorms etc.
4- Knoxville is 500 times the city Lubbock is. That place is pretty bleak.
5- did I mention money?
