🏈 Javier Arenas: "If a guy calls me just a return man, that's disrespect"

While Javy's story to reach the level Rashad's did last year he's certainly made his mark on me.

Last season I thought he was one of the best tacklers in our secondary. They may have completed the pass on Javy's side, but yards after the completion were few and far between.

It's amazing to me he was a kid headed to one of the multi-directional schools in Florida before he committed to Alabama. A rare find and credit goes to Dave Rader for seeing what he could contribute.

But, my gosh...has this kid flourished as a CB under Saban and Smart's teaching?

His closing spead on the WR after the catch is amazing. His coverage is tight and he always seems to be in a very good position to make a play. He has blossumed under Saban and Smart.

Javy's performance last year was one of the best I've seen from a CB in a long time. Only thinking of him as a returner isn't just disrespectful, it's criminal ignorance. He's going to be one of the best corners in the country this year if he stays healthy and is a potential first round draft pick. He is a rare breed. Probably the strongest pound for pound player we have, one of the fastest, one of our best tacklers and a great leader for the team. He is invaluable on this team... so yeah, to think of him as just a return man, is unquestionably stupid.

I remember last pre-season someone posted "If Javier Arenas is starting at corner, we are in trouble."

I don't remember who it was, but in hindsight it is hilarious.

I know I had a lot of doubts about the defense going in. Kareem and Rashad were the only known quantities in the secondary. LB, other than Ro was a huge question mark, and the DL hadn't wowed anybody in 2007. Sure Cody was big, but could he play? We had a lot of guys emerge as good defensive players last year that we weren't sure about, Arenas, Woodall, Reamer, Cody, Higtower just to name a few.
