📝 January Recruiting

Basically the rest of our class is a crap shoot. I'm a gambler, give me them dice.

I think we get Surtain and Taylor-Stewart. I think we also land Copeland and Petite -Frer. That's my short wish list, along with keeping Quay Walker in the fold. Getting two 6'2 corners would be huge. Two Dre Kirkpatrick type guys outside would be hell on opposing offenses.

I read over on the rant that Tua is the player challenged with hosting Justyn Ross. That damn Saban is a genius! What better way to get your #1 WR prospect to comment, than have the CFP OVP serve as his host.
Mack Wilson is hosting LB Quay Walker as well. Mack will likely set him straight! LB JJ Peterson gets player host Ben Davis. Is Saban throwing in the towel?
DB Surtain, Jr gets Trevon Diggs, DL Bobby Brown gets Phidarian Mathis, LB Vernon Jackson gets Jamey Moseley, WR Xavier Williams gets Jerry Jeudy, DB Tyson Campbell gets Nigel Knott, OT Petite-Frere had Alex Leatherwood, DL Malik Langham has Quinnen Williams, DB Julius Irvin has Najee Harris, and QB James Foster has Henry Ruggs.

It was supposed to be Jalen... But Saban thought twice and decided Tua passing along his messages was better than Jalen handing them off.

Key storylines: Big Crimson Tide recruiting weekend
Andrew Bone • BamaInsider.com@AndrewJBone

The University of Alabama will host several elite visitors this weekend. The Crimson Tide is also celebrating its 17th national championship after a thrilling 26-23 overtime win against Georgia. There are many key storylines heading into the big recruiting weekend. Below is a closer look of the top targets heading to T-Town.

Alabama has to close with elite DBs

Five-star CB Patrick Surtain will visit Alabama this weekend.
Nick Lucero/Rivals.com

Defensive back is the most critical position of need for Alabama in the 2018 class. Alabama is losing its top six defensive backs on the roster. Immediate playing time is a strong selling point. The history of defensive backs in Tuscaloosa is stout with many top performers in the NFL and the 2017 Jim Thorpe award winner, Minkah Fitzpatrick.

Alabama welcomes long-time targets/teammates

Patrick Surtain

, five-star cornerback, and
Tyson Campbell,

Rivals100 cornerback, from American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida. Alabama will also host
Julius Ivrin,

Rivals100 safety from Servite High School in Anaheim, California.
Surtain has become a more realistic possibility for the Crimson Tide than a few months ago. He made a few trips to Tuscaloosa during the season, and was also in Atlanta in September for the Tide's season opener against Florida State.

Surtain's recruitment is considered a close battle between Alabama and LSU at this time. He was considered an LSU lean throughout much of his recruitment. Surtain will bring several family members with him this weekend including his parents, grandmother and two sisters.

Campbell was once considered an Alabama lean. He has also been a Miami lean. He is now considered a Georgia lean. His recruitment has changed a few times so you never know what will happen after this weekend. His parents will join him in Tuscaloosa.

Irvin is a new name to the Crimson Tide's recruitment board. He is recruited by new Alabama special teams coordinator, Jeff Banks. Irvin received an offer from Alabama on Wednesday and decided to take an immediate official visit. He has been considered a USC or Washington lean for a while. This will mark his first trip to Tuscaloosa.

Alabama hopes to put itself in strong position for at least one of these three defensive back targets after this weekend. A pair of targets- Surtain and Irvin- have fathers who played in the NFL. They are both very familiar with Nick Saban and the success he has in developing defensive backs for the next level.

Alabama will host few more defensive backs next weekend-

Isaac Taylor-Stuart,

five-star cornerback from Helix High School in San Diego, California, and
Eddie Smith,

three-star cornerback from Salmen High School in Slidell, Louisiana.

Alabama commitment Quay Walker
Rivals.com

Alabama will host a pair of linebacker commitments and one who is committed elsewhere this weekend. Alabama has yet to move forward with recruiting other linebacker targets in hopes of keeping both commitments on board. Alabama also wants to flip the script on one of its long time targets.

Quay Walker,

four-star from Crisp County High School in Cordele, Georgia, is set to return to Tuscaloosa. He considered taking an official visit to Athens this weekend. He met with Alabama coaches Tosh Lupoi, Pete Golding and Denzel Devall on Wednesday.
Walker decided he will take an official visit to Alabama this weekend. He will visit Auburn next week and will visit Georgia on the weekend prior to National Signing Day. Most believe Walker will flip his commitment with Tennessee also in the mix. He visited the Volunteers last weekend.

Walker committed to Alabama during the summer. His strongest relationship with coaches in Tuscaloosa are now a new head coach at Tennessee or the new defensive backs coach with the Oakland Raiders (Derick Ansley). Tosh Lupoi has since taken on Walker's recruitment for Alabama. Walker's mother will also visit Tuscaloosa.

Vernon Jackson

, three-star from Boling High School in Texas, opted not to sign with Alabama in December in order to take official visits in January. He visited Texas last weekend. He will visit TCU next weekend and then a final visit to Texas A&M. He will travel to Tuscaloosa this weekend with his mother.
Alabama wants to keep Jackson on board. He has been a big target for the Tide since he participated in Alabama's camp during the summer.

JJ Peterson

, Rivals100 from Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia, was considered a strong candidate to sign with Alabama for several months. He eliminated all other schools after the new head coach was named in Knoxville. He announced his commitment to the Volunteers at the U.S. Army All-American game.
Peterson decided to give Alabama one final opportunity. Tennessee is in very good shape to hang on to its verbal pledge heading into this trip. Things obviously can change in a heartbeat, but Alabama has a lot of ground to make up this weekend.

New offers have been extended in the last two weeks at different positions. Alabama has yet to offer any new linebacker targets. Alabama will have a good idea on where things stand with each of these players after the weekend. A new offer or two might go out next week if there is any doubt regarding the two commitments or if Peterson is 100-percent locked in with his decision.

Key in-state targets

Justyn Ross is the No.1 player in Alabama
Chad Simmons

Alabama has not targeted many in-state players in this recruiting cycle. Jalyn Armour-Davis, four-star cornerback from St. Paul's in Mobile, is the only in-state commitment. Alabama will host a trio of in-state prospects this weekend. At least two are considered key targets the Crimson Tide hopes to sign in February.

Justyn Ross

, five-star wide receiver from Central High School in Phenix City, will make his way back to T-Town. Many consider Ross a Clemson lean at this time. He has already taken an official visit with the Tigers. He will take an official visit to Auburn next weekend.
Ross has a close friend on the Crimson Tide football team in former Central star

Markail Benton

. However, Tua Tagovailoa will serve as his host this weekend. Ross said at the Under Armour All-America game that his mother is fine with him going to Clemson while his grandmother wants him to stay closer to home and prefers Alabama. Both will visit with him this weekend.
Malik Langham,

three-star defensive end from Lee High School in Huntsville, has been on Alabama's recruiting radar for a long time. Alabama was very high on him during the spring and was impressed with his performance during camp. However, Alabama decided to wait until December to extend an offer.
Nick Saban had an in-home visit last month. Tosh Lupoi had an in-home visit with Langham on Thursday night. He is one of Alabama's top defensive targets. He visited Vanderbilt last weekend. He has also taken a visit to Notre Dame. He is scheduled to visit Florida and Tennessee in the next two weeks. Langham's parents and sister will also visit join Langham on the visit.

James Foster,

three-star quarterback from Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, will also visit. Foster is another prospect who has been on the Tide's radar for a while. The former North Carolina and Missouri commitment was recruited by former Alabama offensive coordinator, Brian Daboll.
Alabama extended an offer earlier this week to

Brock Purdy,

three-star quarterback from Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona. Purdy will visit Alabama next weekend. He seems like the most realistic option for Alabama in this class at the quarterback position.Elite OL target in town

Rivals100 OL Nick Petit-Frere
Nick Lucero/Rivals.com

Nick Petit-Frère,

Rivals100 offensive tackle from Berkeley Prep in Tampa, Florida, returns to Tuscaloosa for the first time in several months. He did not take a trip to Alabama during the regular season. The potential five-star (final rankings next week) has been at the top of Alabama's wish list for a while. Alabama offensive line coach Brent Key has led the recruiting charge.
Petit-Frère has kept things very tight-lipped regarding his favorite. He has taken official visits to Michigan and Notre Dame. He is scheduled to visit Florida next weekend. Petit-Frere will likely wait until signing day to announce a decision. His mother will join him in Tuscaloosa this weekend. He is also expected to have Alabama offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood as his official visit host.

A few more commitments in T-Town

Alabama commitment Xavier Williams
Rivals.com

Xavier Williams

, four-star wide receiver from Chaminade-Madonna High School in Hollywood, Florida, signed with Alabama in December. Williams will bring his parents and brother with him to Tuscaloosa for his official visit. Another south Florida star, Jerry Jeudy, will serve as his host.
Williams remained solid with his decision throughout the process and never visited another school. He had a great showing at the Under Armour All-America game.

Bobby Brown

, four-star defensive tackle from Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas, backed away from his commitment to Texas A&M on December 20. He committed to Alabama two days later. Brown did not sign in December. He is still giving Texas A&M an opportunity, but appears solid with the Crimson Tide.
Brown is returning to Tuscaloosa this weekend to help celebrate the Tide's national championship win. This is an unofficial visit. He took an official visit to Alabama in October. He will bring several family members including his mother, three brothers, aunt, uncle and cousin. Alabama is very excited to have Brown back in Tuscaloosa especially due to the fact he is a critical player at a position of need.

Reuben Foster sold Mack and he imitates Reuben ad much as he can. I know Mack has bought in to The Process and loves our school, so yes, he will set Quay straight on that Georgia shit.
