From my understanding it's more of a tradition and age old adage to the game itself. Just like walking, it's the professional level, a game for gentlemen, played with honor, so it's just a rule that sets it a part from folks like us that beat the ball around on the weekends. That was always my thought anyways to why this was a rule.
