Its funny how the schools are handling this. ND says there is no rivalry, Michigan says there is.

When I heard Kelly I was left wondering "why on earth did he decide to do that?!?!"

Today I'm left wondering, "why on earth did he decide to do that?!?!"

For those "catching up" on Kelly's comments:

"I really haven't seen it as one of those historic, traditional Notre Dame rivalries," Kelly said on a conference call. "I've seen it as just one of those great football games that Notre Dame has played.

"For me, I've been in Michigan a long time, I've always felt the Notre Dame-Michigan game was a big regional game. But in the Notre Dame history books, this game has (been) played, but obviously there have been some years where it hasn't been played for a number of years."

With Bama going for a three peat, this reminds me of why ND did not have one in the late 40's. The 1948 ND team was undefeated and was the ONLY undefeated team in ND's history that was NOT the NC. Here's why.

ND won the 1947 AP NC, but it wound up being very controversial, and resulted in the only special post season poll in the history of the AP (see link). Michigan would win this poll , but the AP left the 1947 NC with ND. Because of this, ND had no shot at the 1948 AP NC when Michigan went undefeated even though ND went undefeated also. ND would win it again in 1949, so Michigan was the reason they didn't get the three peat.

Here is to the trend continuing...
