Considering Jalen Hurts was on his way to winning SEC Offensive Player of the Year in his true freshman season for Alabama, it’s fair to question whether the nation’s top dual-threat quarterback prospect Tua Tagovailoa had any second thoughts regarding his commitment to the Tide.

According to his father, Galu Tagovailoa, staring elite competition in the face wasn’t about to scare his son off.

The elder Tagovailoa recently gave an interview to Rivals recruiting analyst Adam Gorney and stated that while many would have seen Hurts’ presence on the roster as a negative, his son sees it as an opportunity.

ā€œTo watch Jalen Hurts just tear things up, awesome season, and I felt like I needed to talk to Tua and reconfirm to see if that’s what he really wants,ā€ Galu Tagovailoa said.

ā€œHe said, ā€˜Dad, if I’m going to play for the best team, if I’m going to be the best, then I have to compete against the best. I can’t second-guess myself.’ I said if he was set with his mind then let’s make it happen.ā€

In an age where so many quarterbacks are eager to cut and run at the first sign of competition, something the Alabama program suddenly knows all about following multiple quarterback transfers over the last few months, it’s refreshing to see an elite prospect understand that he could benefit from the competition — instead of taking the easy route and running from it.

Whether Tagovailoa sees the field or not in 2017, given his massive talent and performance on the camp circuit, you can expect the young player to consistently push Hurts all season long. No matter how much Hurts progresses in his second season in Tuscaloosa, a true freshman will likely only be a play away from running the Alabama offense should the reigning SEC Offensive Player of the Year need to miss any action. Thankfully for the Tide, the team now has a backup eager to compete for that playing time and not looking to run from it.

Shame I can't wow everyone with my phonics, but I've taken the time to learn to properly pronounce Tagovailoa, backwards and forward. It ranks as one of my bigger investments this early in his career.

DAMN he's got a quick release!!!

Quick and not in the air long. We haven't had a lefty in a while, but I enjoy watching their release for some reason. When Snake was with the Raiders and Oilers he was poetry with the ball and Mike Shula had a nice release. Am I leaving anyone out? Each recruit is like a Ferrari, can't wait to take em for a spin.

Dear god. Yall can wipe Tua's jizz off your faces now.

Blake Barnett, Cooper Bateman, Phillip Sims, and Star Jackson were all Elite 11 QBs too.

How'd they work out?

I'm waiting....

Don't think any of them finished #1 overall and never saw any quotes from the instructors comparing their performance with the likes of Andrew Luck. Stop pissin in our cornflakes you big bastage.

So was Deshaun Watson. Not sure why you're hating so strongly.

He's got a spirit about him that is special. Not sure how to explain it but he's just a neat kid.

Ultimately I don't think he ever plays in front of Hurts. Buuuut, I seriously doubt Hurts goes injury free for 2-3 years. Great security blanked to have another dual threat stud.

I'm with SLO here. An Elite 11 appearance is nice and winning the MVP of this competition is as well.

BUT.

2013 MVP of the Elite 11 camp? Sean White, Auburn (over Watson.) Among others ... Jeff Driskel and John Brantley of Florida. From 2001 through 2014 there were four, first round draft picks.

Without looking it up I want to say it was 2009's camp where one of the 11 was drafted--as a tight end. (Blake Bell, OU.)

Why weren't those past Elite 11 participants all-stars? Hmmm. Maybe it's because football is a team game. No blocking, no RB, no receiver and you have no all-star. Alabama doesn't need a QB who takes over a game. It makes the team one dimensional. After Bo got hurt against Clemson, Alabama was one dimensional and Clemson shut it down.

The worst that can happen is if Tua and the other new freshman (who was also at Elite 11) push Hurts to improve his shortcomings.

I've seen several comment along the lines of "what do we know about Tua? He's facing Hawaii high school defenses!"

That's more competition the the air he's facing at these camps.

Welp, no more cornflakes for me. Maybe Tua can develop into a quality holder for FGs and XPs? Or maybe signaling in plays?
