🏈 I'm bitching a bit...tired, tired of hearing the complaints/comments on our defense Saturday...

Seriously.

It's more than a point per minute. It's an offense that put the defense back on the field time and time and time again.

BUT...

It's not a three and out situation folks. It's a seven point difference in the game in a matter of just a few plays.

As fair warning...

I'm likely not to be the most civil individual this week if I run across complaints on the defense...

No complaints from me. I'm very pleased with what I've seen so far. After watching several other teams from the SEC I can't imagine any Alabama fan being that upset or worried about our defense.

RTR :a:

Can we have threads like this for the rammer jammer / my school has more class than your school / political correct fan talk? :D

In all seriousness our secondary is young. It will take some time to gel. I don't think it's a serious problem. But there have been times with a been out of place. No panic mode from me but then again we haven't been tested by a quality qb IMHO. We will find out next week if Mallet has time to test us if we bend or break.

First 3 drives by Duke, the defense looked very good. The interception by Dre may be one of the best coverage plays I've seen on defense. He checked his man down at the LOS and picked up the inside guy running what I think was a wheel route. Would have to go back and watch again, but he made a perfect play on the ball.

Saban was right when he said they lost a little intensity at the end of the half, but hell, after scoring 28 points in the first quarter, it's hard to keep the intensity. They did a good job in the second half not allowing a point, and if I'm not mistaken, they allowed less than 100 yards of offense in the second half.

Overall, I'm still not concerned. One thing I have noticed in two games though, is some of the linebackers getting sucked into the middle and runs bouncing outside for good chunks. That may just be the young guys, I haven't been able to watch the replay yet. I will have more on this tonight though.

I havent commented on the defense yet this year, but I want to contribute to Terry's ill mood, so here goes.:rofl:

Personally, I think the defense has some holes. I know that's "captain obvious" speaking but still. Our pass rush isn't where it needs to be, to be dominant. Of course, most teams are not going to take 5-7 step drops to allow us to get to them either, so maybe it's a moot point? But, we're lacking in sacks, bottom line.

The secondary has some holes, as evidenced by the first 3 games. When I say "holes", I don't mean from a lack of talent. We have the talent, but the kids are young. This is to be expected. It's also to be expected that the defensive backfield will get better with experience. It will also help if we can generate a little more pass rush. We're going to occasionally blow coverage, and we're going to give up some plays if the pass rush doesn't get there. That's just the way it is. In fact, regarding coverage, even Saban's more mature defenses have historically blown coverages largely due to the complex schemes and blitzes we employ. It happens.

We do seem to give up the edge a little too much. I noticed Duke have some real success sealing our outside.

All in all, I am happy with the defense, but I know we need more game time. I know the kids need to continue to play together and develope that chemistry. Are we a great defense? I don't think so. That's part of the problem too, IMHO. We're conditioned to having a great defense. We expect it. If the slightest thing goes wrong then we act like the sky is falling, because we're used to having that dominant defense. Are we a good defense? Absolutely, and I think a lot of coaches would kill to have the defense we have.

Arkansas will be the real test. Let's see how we perform against an offense like that before we make a concrete jugement on this year's group.

What defense? Our offense has been looking so good, I forgot about defense.

Seriously, we look a little immature, that's all. We've got guys flying around, overpursuing a little bit - they'll settle down a little when they get a little more experience - that and we haven't had to really buckle down yet. When we have to man up, I'm fully expecting Saban's boys to rise to the occasion.

And, if not, we'll just outscore them, something we haven't been able to do in a long time.

With an offense like ours, we have the luxury of allowing our coaches to bring the 'D' along through process.

I don't think there is a 'D' out there who could hold our offense under 45 if we want to score that many.

And, I don't think there's an 'O' out there who could score more than 30 on us (and I'm talking the very best 'O').

It's simple math, if we come prepared and avoid injuries - we will win.

We all got spoiled by last years D. No one can say different. I feel like you AFF. We have such a potent Ofeense, we can allow our Defense to mature and progress as the season goes. This weekend might be a shootout, but with our O, i feel confident we can hang as many points on someone as we want to, or have to in order to win the game.

I'd be surprised if their conditioning is anything like ours.
Am I concerned? Yes. It's Arky and I have to live with these people. That's a lot easier when we win. About the defense? A little. It's like the beginning of every season though. I always worry about the defense, special teams, offense, kicking game...I worry about everything. The difference this year is that I don't have to worry about the offense so maybe the extra worry is applied to the defense. IDK, but I know we'll be ok. How ok is dependent on our record at the end of the season.

Does this comment apply to Coach Saban, too?

He wasn't very complimentary about the defense's play when interviewed at halftime during the game.

Yikes, he wasn't happy was he? He wasn't happy on the airplane to Duke either. Something's under his skin. I think it's the D that is driving him crazy. He knows what it could be and should be, yet it isn't there yet. Not only that but for the 2nd game in a row we were flying around in the backfield or around the line of scrimmage, but next thing you know the opposing RB is 5 yards or more down the field. There were several times over the past 2 weeks that we should have tackled a RB or QB for a loss, yet they skate through. That won't fly in the SEC and must be corrected. I think things like make Saban absolutely fume.
