🏈 I think it's both safe, and fair, to call this "Gumpin'" for Fan Day Sunday...

I'm Sure.
Some scoff at me for paying to see a football game I could watch on tv.
Some scoff because I drink wine.
But I don't buy memorabilia. I don't take photos to remember places I've been for the most part.
My response was not focused on what people buy as much it was directed at the outrage of someone asking for LC's gloves and then putting them for sale on line.

Now... I've never been a jock sniffer.
I like college football, but why would I want gloves somebody else wore? Or someone else's championship ring? Just never made sense to me.

The entire point of that story was a grown man using his son to profit off of the nice gesture of a player. Collins probably doesn't give the gloves away if he knows the dad takes them and sells them. It's the mentality of these guys. I'm a capitalist and all for profit, but I don't think Fan Day is a for profit kind of event put in by Alabama. Anyone can have an opinion on the matter, but seeing some fat slob running his heart out on the field to grab an 18 years olds autograph is a little weird. I take the kids and get things signed for our collection which is on display in my son's room, so I'm not against it, but you have to admit it's getting a little goofy that they've named the event of opening the autograph gates.

I've never argued against the point that it's weird. I wouldn't even ask for Jesus' autograph. Autographs are a shallow and easy way to prove you've met someone famous/important because somehow just meeting famous people makes some people feel important. It's a perfect opportunity to interact with someone and actually learn something about that person or from that person, to show genuine interest, wasted.

This. I've interacted with, and had classes with players. Never once asked for autographs.

My daughter, like 5 at the time, wanted JPW's and a few others' autographs. So I bought a collector's football, we went to fan day, and got about a dozen or so autographs. The ball sat in a display case for years, but is now packed away in storage.

I could see them being valuable as a conversation piece. Not so much that you feel special meeting someone famous, but if another person sees you met someone famous that they're interested in, like a Bama players/coach, they're apt to ask when/where/how you did so. Conversation piece.

I have several pictures that are signed and have been given to me as gifts. I have them displayed in my Man Cave. One that I think everyone should have is one I would call, "The Shove!" It is a signed pick by both AJ and Barrett when they had their shoving match in the closing minutes of the 2012 Natty Game. I have a ball that is signed by about 25-30 of the more prominent players of the '09 Natty Team. It came during that one and only Fan Day trip before the '09 season with my son.
To me and for me, they are conversation pieces. As a walk on in '89&90, I thought it was comical that people wanted my autograph on anything. I even explained as much, but they still insisted. You know it is crazy when one of your former HS teammates is in line and asks for your autograph! Some BAMA fans simply don't care!

I have tons of autographed memorabilia (Julio Jones autographed football and jersey, Shaun Alexander autographed football, countless pictures and paintings of players autographed, etc. I love that shit) but I LOATH Fan Day for the simple fact of these asshats that go there for no other reason than to sell the shit on Ebay. I hate it, absolutely hate it. Most of these guys are scumbags. Nico Johnson told me that the reason he signed "To (Insert Name)" on everything he signed was so it would be harder for these jackasses to sell it on Ebay (noone wants to buy an autographed item with someone elses name on it).

I know a lot of celebrities sign this way for that very reason. I'm not one to get autographs or anything, I prefer a good hand shake... I've never been accused of being sentimental.

When I was a kid I ran into David Palmer after a game (he was already graduated and with the Vikings at the time) and I asked for his autograph. I spent the 2012 title game in the NBC box suite with a few celebs and I got a couple of pictures with them (felt awkward even asking them to be honest) but figured I would never have a chance like that again. Only two times I have ever asked for more than a hand shake. But I do have several signed items that were given to me as gifts, mostly from when I was a kid and collecting baseball cards.

Hate to say it, but I forgot all about Deonte Thompson. Glad to see he's making his presence felt, because I was really excited when he commited and what I felt he could bring to the team.

One thing I'm not sure about is what he said about Ridley. I have been hearing on here that he will definitely play, and here this guy is saying he's the least likely to play as a Freshman.
