Great idea for a thread!
In order of most playing time, here's my 2 cents:
1. Jamar King - Defensive End (JUCO); We only have 4 D Lineman back that played legit snaps last year (Allen, Payne, Tomlinson, Hand). King could play 3-4 DE or 3-4 DT.. Probably best fit is 4-3 DT. He's taller and not as much as a bruiser as Robinson and Reed were, but this guy is super athletic for his size (6'5 290). He was even rushing off the edge in JUCO... Check him out:
2A. Ben Davis - ILB; Inside Linebacker is by far the most thin position on the roster. Rueben Foster will obviously be back and a starter... After that it's just Shawn Dion Hamilton who played a little bit this year. He's not physically imposing but is apparently super smart and physical. After that it seems like things are completely up for grabs. Davis is a freakish athlete for his size (6'2 230). The way we've been playing LB's in "specialty" roles/packages, I'd be shocked if he isn't playing in some sort of capacity next year. My guess is he starts and plays on first & second downs - Then comes off in pass coverage. Although he's physically capable of being an every down guy... He was catching bubble screens this year. Check him out:
2B: Lyndell Wilson: If the staff decides to start him at ILB, he could be right there with Davis for early playing time. He's a special athlete and is super physical. Check him out:
3. Charles Baldwin - Offensive Tackle (JUCO); The Right Tackle spot will be up for grabs this year. Depending on how Baldwin is able to mentally transition at the SEC level, he could have a great chance to play. As noted, Saban always wants his JUCO dudes to play right away. The biggest hang up I see is Piersbacher possibly moving out to RT. He has the size/speed/feet to play either guard spot or tackle. Plus he now has legit experience. There's been a handful of JUCO guys that came in and just mentally could not start or even play early in transition. Physically, Baldwin is more than ready (6'6" 315) Here is highlights from 2 yrs ago:
4. BJ Emmons - Running Back; This kid is special. Something about him I don't think we've seen since Trent Richardson. He just has a "slippery" quality that must be a combination of strength & speed that is so hard to tackle. There are questions about his ability to qualify, but there's a good chance he makes it in. RB is not far behind ILB in terms of depth questions, so he could jump right in the mix. IMO Bo Scarbrough is "next up" with Damien Harris looking like a responsible backup RB, but I don't think there's an "it factor" to Harris that could keep a truly special freshman RB off the field. Check him out:
5. Quinnen Williams - Defensive End; With the DL having some spots up for grabs, and the staff's willingness to play a lot of guys, Williams could put himself in the playing time conversation. At 6'4 265, he's not that far off from having the size necessary to play 3-4 DE. If they can put a few more lbs on him, he's got a good shot. Unless the staff is moving a few of our OLB's to DE's, there's not many names to throw out who would play 3-4 DE after Hand/Allen/Tomlinson. Williams is really quick for his size, he's got a chance to be really good.
Quinnen Williams Senior Year
5B. Terrell Hall - The only reason I would rank him behind Williams is his weight. He's only listed at 250 lbs, so he's got some work to do to play DE at Alabama. However, he is just ridiculously talented. At 6'5 he's got a frame that could put on 20-30 lbs and be absolutely dominant. Not used to seeing DL's that are that tall, so he could be special in a different way than we're used to seeing. It's hard to even compare him to anyone we've seen at Bama. Maybe a D'Shawn Hand type of athlete? Just a special mix of size & athleticism for a D Lineman. Check out these highlights... Super impressive:
