It's more of an assault on their accents. Chris Fowler and Rece Davis did/do it every Saturday on Gameday. It's a subtle jab is all. I find it funny as hell, because Yankee accents are annoying, so being able to make fun of them cracks me up. Plus I think fans just enjoy a little color in their conversations with saying it. To your point about the Barn, same thing, just making fun is all.
