🏈 Hurts, Bateman, Barnett and the QB competition

Listened to Reier's podcast, and he was saying the info he has been getting after the practices this week are that ..... Jalen Hurts simply impresses everyone every practice, and that everyone he talks to is talking about Hurts.

But...

He still feels Bateman is the favorite. How awesome is that everybody ?

He also said during drills yesterday that the QB's were asked to make a really long throw. (one that grabbed the attention of the nfl scout types because it gives you an idea of what a QB can or can not do)

Reier said that Bateman was able to make the throw, but it was reliant on everything working out perfectly with the timing, and something else that didn't make much sense, but whatever... long story short Bateman was barely able to pull it off, and the others, according to him zipped it right in there. The younger guys are simply more talented physically.

I think I've reached my limit on following a Bama QB competition. If Bateman wins the job I'm never following another QB competition at Bama. Its pointless.

Pace yourself my friend. One thing we all have in common with the coaches is that everyone wants to win, period. As you noticed in last season's Ole Miss game it didn't take Bama long to get back to plan B when things went south. USC will be plenty good enough to help us identify who gives us the best chance to win.

Clay Helton will be the X-factor for Southern Cal. Can he get this team back to elite level? I'm not convinced, but the talent is there. Big, fast, athletic and their offensive line, d-backs and skill people are difference makers. Going to take our best effort to get it done.

USC will be experienced on offense outside of the QB spot. On defense, thin and inexperienced in the front 7.

I've been keeping up with the QB race at USCw a little. Redshirt junior Max Browne and redshirt freshman Sam Darnold. Max Browne looks like will get the nod, but it's been close with lots of ups and downs through practice. Max is the pocket passer with good command of the huddle. Sam Darnold, the dual-threat with a lot of scrambling ability and the better arm. They say it's really close, maybe we get to see both, but they are saying the call gets made this weekend so they can implement the gameplan for the Tide.

Well fellas, this is it... Jalen Hurts hype train simply can NOT get any bigger at this point. Nor can anyone deny that the buzz that has been growing since the day Hurts got to UA is indeed real.

Alabama football Nick Saban Cooper Bateman Blake Barnett Jalen Hurts Russell Wilson A.J. McCarron

The growing buzz surrounding Alabama true freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts has made its way to Mobile, home of private quarterback coach David Morris, whose client list at QB Country includes former Alabama quarterbacks A.J. McCarron and Jake Coker and 2016 first-round pick Paxton Lynch.

Apparently, Morris has heard enough about Hurts through the quarterback grapevine to think a true freshman lining up behind center for the Crimson Tide this fall isn't out of the question.

"I think some guys can do it, and I think he may be one of them," Morris said. "I don't know that kid personally, but everything I've heard is it almost sounds like you're talking about tRussell Wilson right now. There are guys out there that are just ball players and they can do it."

While it hasn't been a route taken by Nick Saban in the past, Morris is of the opinion that breaking in a rookie at UA may not be as difficult than at some other places.

"I think at Alabama it may even be easier than others because there is so much talent [around the quarterback]," Morris said. "I think it would be off the charts, but everything I've heard is that this kid is off the charts."

"The quarterback battle remains undecided, and Saban said that's more a case of waiting to see who wins the team and who is most consistent in the scrimmages. True freshman Jalen Hurts is legitimately in the conversation and has the kind of ability to create that would give the Tide another dimension on offense, but Blake Barnett and Cooper Bateman also have their strengths.

In other words, just because somebody starts the opener against USC doesn't mean the quarterback competition ends at that point."

Morris' opinion is about as useful as me or you, he admits to having never met the guy and I doubt hes even seen much (if any) film on him.

But thankfully, as far as the Russel Wilson comparison goes, Hurts is a good four inches taller than Wilson. They claim Russell is 5'11" but there is no chance, he's more likely a true 5'9".
