IRVING, Texas | Former University of Alabama running back Bobby Humphrey is one of 76 players and five coaches named to the 2016 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced this week.
Humphrey, from Birmingham, completed his UA career in 1988 as the school's all-time leader in all-purpose yards with 4,958. He scored 40 career touchdowns and in 1986 as a sophomore set the school's single-season rushing record with 1,471 yards to earn All-America honors. As a junior, he was named United Press International Offensive Player of the Year and again was named All-American.
Humphrey finished 10th in Heisman Trophy voting as a junior and was a serious candidate for the award going into his senior season, but played in just two games due to a foot injury.
Players must have earned first-team All-America recognition from a major selector as utilized by the NCAA for consensus All-American teams to be eligible for the Hall of Fame ballot, and also must have played at least 10 years prior to being considered, played within the last 50 years and cannot be currently playing professional football.
Humprhey was drafted in the first round as the third overall pick in the 1989 supplemental draft and played three seasons with the Denver Broncos of the National Football League, rushing for more than 1,200 yards in his second season there. He spent two years with the Miami Dolphins, but only played in one season.
Humphrey finished his career with 2,857 yards on 695 carries with 15 touchdowns.
The 2016 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be announced on Jan. 8, 2016. The induction ceremony will take place at the National Football Foundation awards dinner in New York City on Dec. 6, 2016.
