🏈 How to stop the short passing game?

A couple of times this year, Kentucky and Utah come to mind, the short passing game has been a real problem to defend. What can you do, or better yet, what did we not do to stop it? What matchups were they exploiting across the middle, and in the flats?

You can contain it by tackling. Too bad our players forgot how to do that last night.

The short passing game is predicated on timing. You need to pop the receivers at the line of scrimmage, or get a defensive end in the passing lane to throw off the timing.

Well said U-Ute, we tried man-pressing at the line of scrimmage but we got burned deep, so we had to pick our poison and we blitzed adn left our corners off a bit.

Really, press coverage beats it, but the only way to consistently beat it is to eliminate YAC and let them eventually stall their drives because of mistakes and timely good plays by the D.

The missed tackles killed us.

Pressure on the QB.

It is a pure timing offense and if you dont get physical with the WR or let a QB get comfortable in the pocket they will eat you alive. It happened last night and you could see it coming every single time.

Press coverage means that the reception is to be contested, increasing the chances for a broken up pass or interception. But Press leaves you open to the deep ball, so equally important is a pass rush that prevents that deep ball the time needed to develope. Because the spread often puts 4-5 WRs out there, this requires numbers at DB plus depth on the DL, which we don't have to the levels that we want.

Think back to the '92 Sugar Bowl. Copeland and Curry hurry Teretta while Teague jumps the quick slant for a pick-6.
