šŸˆ His name is Coach Saban. Not Nick. Not Saban. Here’s why:

Talking about a coach from a different team on this forum is a far less formal setting than addressing said individual. I can and will talk crap about other teams coaches thusly in here. Should I be afforded the opportunity to address any of said individuals I would address them as Coach So & so. Really not hard to separate the two approaches in my mind.

And that's perfectly fine.

But what you're pointing out is the hypocrisy of being mad about someone not referring to "your coach" as "Coach Saban".

Some reporters don't see him as "their Coach" - The same way you don't see Jim Harbough as your coach.

You can respect the title of Coach, want more respect for Coach Saban, or both. But it's hard to take any complaints seriously if you believe the title deserves respect and you don't give the same respect to other "Coaches" - Whether your Coach or not.

This is all so hilarious in it's stupidity. This guy is getting torched in that twitter thread and rightfully so. The second-hand embarrassment feels like The Office at it's peak. Serious Michael Scott vibes from this one.

I've met with CNS several times with several former players (old guys like me). We've called him Coach and/or Nick (sometimes both Coach and Nick during the same conversation). I've also met Miss Terry (same settings) and everyone always referred to her as "Miss Terry." These have all been in informal settings.

but that’s different for you....because u played for bama...
All the coaches are..".coach" to you...
The rest of us....not so much so...
Way i see it....

Ah well, even a contrarian can see that ā€œreportersā€ should adopt a reasonable amount of social grace, can’t you? Should he want to be a contrarian also then he could have used Mr that would keep it respectful.

IMO...all about the mindset. The journalist have to piss on the tree to mark their territory these days to try and prove they are in control and rule all...times we live in, we just need to realize these folks are smarter than everyone else...in their own minds.

They aren't coaches for Alabama. Why would an Alabama fan refer to a guy as "coach" when he's not their coach?

Good point. I did that last year and I regret the hell out of it. If I had known what he was going to do later that evening I would not have even spoken to him. Let me 'splain.

Last year on the LSU weekend we were in Birmingham for the Grandson's game at Samford. We were staying at the Marriott where LSU was headquartered, and very well may have been the only non LSU people there. Our suite was just down the hall from O's. Passed him in the hallway as he was leaving for Tuscaloosa on Saturday morning and said. "Hi Coach". Wife still gives me well deserved grief. :D

@252BAMA there are notable exceptions but me, personally, can't see calling Orgeron "coach." It's the same with Dabo. It would be weird to call him "coach" considering I knew him when he was a player.

Your Orgeron story reminds me of meeting Bobby Cremins several years ago. He wasn't "my coach," and I'm not really a fan of CoC. I still referred to him as coach even though he introduced himself as Bobby.

I guess I’m just old fashioned, but I think you refer or call someone by what title they have earned and especially if they are my senior.
As for the reporter, I didn’t hear it, but I imagine they were nervous and it was simply a slip.
@TerryP , like you, I met Dale Brown years ago in an airport and I referred to him as Coach, even though he wasn’t ā€œmy coachā€ and definitely wasn’t coaching my team. It was something he earned.

Seems like the pool is pretty small these days. Sorry @50+yeartidefan couldn't let that one slide by:).

As far as the reporter, I heard it live and is was very odd to hear. Just sounded awkward and out of place. Definitely not appropriate. Could have been an honest mistake based on nerves but it was out of place.

That's exactly how I took it, I don't think she meant any disrespect. Also, she's a UA grad, former UA dance team gal, and new to sports media.
