The questions I have are not whom Gus is but can he build a staff that will enable Allban to improve next year. NCAA stuff is still not known. He had a good year at AKS. This means he may have a good grasp of the coaching job. Recruiting, will be his first challenge. I do not agree that he is the best hire for BAMA. If he can clean house and take names then we will see them get better.

I don't believe the year he had at ASU is an indicator of his ability. They won the Sun Belt which is certainly an accomplishment especially if you compare that to the job that Ellis Johnson did at Southern Miss. But, that has to be weighed against ASU winning that title last year as well.

He inherited a roster with a lot of upperclassmen. And, the offense he brought with him wasn't that different from the offensive scheme they ran last year with Hugh Freeze.

His decision making on players is a question that deserves an answer. After all, he brought in Michael Dyer with his charges and within a matter of several weeks Dyer is dealing with the same charges again. Second chances? Maybe. Not a good judge of character? Maybe as well.

Right now I can make no other judgment other than he knew what he was getting into and had no reservations about the move.

He will have to have a very dynamic quarterback to succeed at the highest levels in the SEC. Those aren't easily found. Average dual threats at that position are a dime a dozen. But, while those are found often the 8-4 type seasons are coming along with them as well.

Seven years removed from Springdale I believe. One at UArk, two at Tulsa, three at Auburn, one at ASU...

Tulsa would be the question area for me...and that's coming in after Kragthorpe left for Louisville and they brought in Todd Graham—both offensive guys and QB coaches.

I have no idea who started his second year at Tulsa. I don't know if that starter was part of the class his first year. We'd have to go back to Tulsa's archives to find that one out.

Out of the QB's he brought into AU I can think of Rollinson, Moseley, Wallace, and Frazier. Do you call any of those developed?

We have to ask—in fairness—if Malzahn's system would have put any of the three in a better position to make plays this past season. We don't have to ask if any of those players were developed enough to make a difference this season.

I firmly believe a lot of the success Auburn did have in their passing game this season was due to Emory Blake. I can see a future for him on Sunday's.

All that said the only kid I can say we can use as an example of him working with a kid on the collegiate level is Moseley. He came into the Auburn program in year one of Gus as OC. Then we have Clint's injury to consider.

The answer is no. We haven't seen one of his QB's developed. But, there are a few asterisk marks with Clint.

On this same subject, sort of at least, something was just brought to my attention.

Do you guys remember the Springdale Five—that group of recruits Mustain was a part of?

I recall some stories about kids being upset with coaching decisions, parents complaining, etc.

A lot of that was blamed on Nutt not allowing Malzahn to call the plays at Arkansas while at the same time he was sitting on DMAC, Felix Jones, and Payton Hillis in the backfield.

Hmmph.

Talked with TID about it a few minutes and looking back he sees Malzahn's influence as dissension.

We see kids under him leaving Arkansas because of playing time and coaching decisions, Reuben Foster stating he plays where Trooper coaches, and the problems that we've talked about ad nauseum.

The more I think about it, the more I'm lead to believe he's nothing but a fresh Band-aid. Does Ellis Johnson help? He certainly doesn't have anything on his resume that makes me think so. In fact, a blemish with a team in disarray in 2000 is in bold print in my mind.

As it should be. From what I understand, he was a major part of the division among the coaching staff.
