That one of the most difficult things imo to teach an ILB.... GETTING THEM TO USE THEIR FUCKING EYES!!!! A lot of guys second guess and are hesitant in how they play due to that. They just gotta read what they're seeing, trust their instincts, and be aggressive. Whether that's stacking and shedding blocks, when we do we're violent with our hands, when we play a run, we play it inside out and if we're able to get him running to the sideline, don't overrun the play, but as you're running him towards that sideline take away that space and make a tackle. And like you said, the pulling guard will almost always tell you where the play is going, just fill your correct gap, play it inside out, don't allow cutback lanes, if he bounces it outside then scrape over and go make a play. That's something else I can't stand, guys just not doing their job and trying to be a hero, which usually leads to missed assignments and a big time play given up.
JUST DO YOUR JOB!!!
