🏈 For those bitching about Bateman starting

Guys and gal.

Bateman besides for not keeping it a few times on the zone read looked really good. I challenge you to review the game and watch without bias. I can see why Lane wants him in the game, the offense flows where it is supposed to with him in the game. His 1 interception was really on the receiver and he had one other iffy throw that he threw the slant to the wrong shoulder which cost us a first down by half a yard. Overall though, the plays where called correctly and he was decisive with the ball.

Coker played ok and made some big runs and competed well. His misses were awful and could have easily thrown 4 interceptions in the game, struggled getting the plays and getting them called, wasn't on the same page with his receivers and was throwing high alot which is very dangerous. Coker did lead a great drive in his first one even with some big misses and the touchdown throw he made was a great throw. When he rolls out he looks good dropping back and letting it go for some reason he struggles bad,, even with his supposed cannon.

I think because of public sentiment and effort Coker may get the start this week but if you compare apples to apples Bateman did well and you can see why the offensive coordinator likes him more.. he runs what he is supposed to, at the speed he supposed to and makes better decisions.

I ultimately don't care who plays as long as we win but after rewatching the film a few times Bateman, besides for not keeping it on the zone read a few times did very well and got us in the right plays.

The defense has no respect for Bateman... The run game was much more effective with Coker in the game.

Bateman is the first ever dual threat that doesn't run... And Kiffin doesn't trust him to stretch the D. The 1 deep ball was a disaster INT.

He is not the answer to our problems at QB. JMO

Can't agree with you entirely. He made at least two poor decisions on read option plays when he did not pull the ball out of the running back's belly and keep it. That is his advantage over Coker, plain and simple, running the read option. if he doesn't execute that properly I would rather see the guy with the big arm out there.

Look at the int and see what happened. Receiver(stewart I think) cut off the route. the ball was where it was supposed to be. There are two ways to stretch a defense, deep or wide. Bateman does a good job of forcing them to spread out and open gaps. Our offensive line caused alot of our problems in the run game early.. a bunch of missed assignments.

I don't think either of these guys are the "answer" and I am not "team anybody" (except Alabama) I just reviewed the film a few times with an open mind and it was clear to me why Kiffin would like Bateman. If I was responsible for the offense I would want the guy who can figure out what I am telling him to do and run the play the way I want.

While reviewing I watched what Coker did well and it was mostly improvise when he made a mistake or it wasn't there. He could/should have thrown two more interceptions if Ole' miss guys wouldn't have just plain dropped them and there were two or three throws that were so far thrown over someones head that it was embarassing. I like Coker and would love to see him get it together but it's not there yet.. he was very fortunate Saturday night for it not to be much worse.

But back to my topic, people don't need to just dump on Bateman or the coaching staff for starting him.. after watching the film I can see why that was an idea and why I would have done it if I was Lane Kiffin. Nothing more frustrating as a leader than trying to lead someone who can't or won't do what he is intructed.

Sounds like you're describing Bateman on the read option. Not sure if intentional or not.

I'd rather have a first time starter be a little hesitant to run the ball himself in the first quarter than have a quarterback who is going to have a 50% completion percentage and turn the ball over. They should have kept Bateman in and let him get more comfortable. The run game did better later because of the lead they had and their defense was sucking wind. I'm telling you Coker is not the answer. Bateman's INT was Stewart's fault and Henry crawled his ass after the game for it and his attitude.

Both have their positives and negatives. Bateman is supposed to be the more athletic of the two. More short to intermediate passer and a threat in the read option. Problem is, he made bad reads and didn't run it. Coker has the gunslinger arm and mentality. His problem is slow to react on small windows and trusts that his big arm will get the ball through the window. Also, his accuracy suffers because of it.
Neither one played mistake free football and ultimately, that is what CNS wants!! If Bateman is going to misread the read option and constantly put us in 2nd or 3rd in long situations, then we are better suited with Coker and his arm. It at least makes the defense respect the ability to throw the deep ball.

Coker's running stats, 8.3 yds per carry against Ole Miss. LOL

According to who?

I completely agree with coaching decision to start Bateman. Hey coaches did not trust our O-line and rightly so.
Also offense flows better with Bateman but the SEC defenses not respecting pass is a big issue.
I think Coker starts but I think coaches will continue to give some playing time to Bateman and will put a short leash on Coker. Unless they think Barnett is ready. He doesnt look physically ready. In the QB mess we are in.. Barnett would have been the best option... can he be mentally ready in 1 months Who knows?

Bateman is getting slammed because he threw at least one incomplete pass. Alabama fans expect every player to be an All-American and win the game on their own. Bateman isn't done for the year and neither is Coker. Everybody always screams that our QBs aren't ready because they never get any experience. Well, this happens when you give them experience.

There's something about Bateman's passes I don't like. His deep balls seem to float and his intermediate passes seem to be like a sinker ball pitcher. They seem to have a downward trajectory. But either way, neither of these guys really impress me. To me we "officially" do not have a quarterback for this year at the moment. Unless one of these guys steps up and makes a lot more progress we're just basically playing this year out for next season when we can hopefully find a QB. One thing I've learned (if I didn't know it already) is what a difference a QB can make to an offense. Both good and bad.

i'm sure most here have heard the expression, "be careful what you wish for".

people complain that our QBs need more game experience. it's a little difficult to give them that experience without them actually playing in a game. and putting them in the game in the 4th quarter for mop-up duty against a non-elite school does nothing good to earn them real and good game experience. playing against a defense from a lesser (no way of saying it without sounding condescending) conference that's tired and winded doesn't help them against a defense from a power-5 conference that's fresh and hungry.

trial-by-fire is a good way to get that game experience. it's not the most ideal situation. but until one of these players takes control, TAKES TOTAL CONTROL, of this offense, then it will be a turnstile position until that happens.

say they sit both Coker and Bateman and put in Barnett next week and he does well. what has been proven? the only thing it says is our red-shirt QB is good enough to beat a lesser-conference team. he does well enough that the coaches put him in against UGA. then he gets his ass busted because he's not ready for the speed and determination of an SEC caliber defense. then the complaining and bitching will again commence about how it was stupid to burn his red-shirt and we should have stuck with a more experienced QB.

right now, this team, at that position, is a double-edged sword. no one has, of yet, taken the reins to lead this team.

yes, it was almost done last saturday. and i was one of those that sat there (watching it on tv while on the Quad), in the late minutes of the final quarter, believing that we were going to pull off the comeback and get the win. but it just wasn't meant to be. blame the coaches, blame the QB, blame the receivers, blame the defense, blame the offensive line, blame whoever. but until this team can come together and one of these QBs can take total control, then this loss will not be the only loss of this season.

we have gotten so used to winning that when we lose, it's more like a thousand daggers in the heart rather than a "well, we'll get them next time". losing sucks, it really does. nobody likes it, but half the teams that play each saturday will lose their game. it just so happens that last saturday we were one of those teams. we lost this same game last year, and it sucked just as bad then as it does now. but we got it together and won the conference and made the playoffs. hopefully florida, aTm, lsu, or miss st. can give them a conference loss or two to help us out.

but if this team does not learn to play as a single, cohesive unit, then it will certainly be a long season with way too many disappointments.

I laugh so hard hearing people say Coker can spread the field. I have never seen worse down field passing. I saw one pass I felt was a decent look deep, the others were something I can see anywhere on a Friday night in the south. Overthrows, underthrows, all over the board.

Bateman looked fine to me... especially for his first start. Dude was 8 of 9 starting out. Seems like the coaches hold back a bit on the passing game with him but...

I was pleased. . Sad he got hurt. I hope the concussion. Is short lived. Bama will need him this season.
