šŸ€ For reference...Grant's contract.

If Bama football was down 22 scholarship players in football, proportionally the same number transferring as Grant has had, we would not be having this conversation. You'd be all for firing the coach on the spot and the university would have already done so.
On the other hand, there are a lot of fans who seem to believe that putting the right coach in place is as simple as hooking up a new mouse to a computer.

It's not "plug and play."

Something to consider. Let's say this was a football conversation and the team we were discussing were down 22 players—a full unit. In the last few games, with Obasohan dealing with his hip injury, we're playing with eight.

That said, I noticed your comment the other day about the scholarship numbers and asking why; suggesting this all lies on Grant.

Again, not a plug and play situation. We lost Pollard in the middle of the summer. Replacing someone with his potential in a span of three months is a lot easier said than done.

I'm not making excuses for what we're seeing with the basketball program. However, these are issues that can't be summarily dismissed because they don't fit an individuals narrative.

TerryP I get your point. I could see this on the horizon. We had this discussion last year. I think you and I both said - with the returning players he could not win this year. There was no way. That's why I think he gets another year. Can you honestly see them even being competitive next season?

I think my answer is no.

It's hard to say. We lose Rele, but have two guys coming in that are said to be good shooters. I hate the thought of relying on frosh though.

It's my suspicion Battle looks at this as a business decision. And if he does, I suspect Grant gets another year.

Here we get into the question, "If not Grant, who?" I don't want to see "hire Bruce Pearl." It's one thing walking on the edge of recruiting rules. It's quite another to break them, get caught, then lie to the NCAA about breaking them.

Matt Painter at Purdue.

Good coach.

One, we'd be looking at the buyout plus what would be likely a contract worth 2.5-2.75MM a year just to put him on the same level as what he's getting now.

Why leave Purdue for Bama?

Why leave the area he grew up in to come down south?

Any chance at a coach like McDermott from Creighton?

Here's the thing. McDermott is doing well at Creighton. He had a losing record at Iowa State.

Eerily similar records for Grant and McDermott.

Grant at VCU= .752 winning percentage.
McDermott at Creighton= .748 winning percentage.

Grant overall= .660
McDermott overall= .601 (same as Grant's percentage at Bama to date)

Okay, you may have me on the business decisions. But wouldn't you say he's on the hot seat after two straight dismal years? He went 16-18 last year, now 13-8 this year in the best conference. You really take a look at it, he really hasn't lived up to expectations at Purdue. I know he has a big contract over at Purdue, but if he gets released, why not consider him? Purdue is a hard place to coach. Expectations are higher than they are here, they play in the Big 10, and their instate rival is Notre Dame and Indiana, both who've had more success than Purdue in recent years. I'm just saying, if he gets released, why not go after him?

From a business aspect this is a failing business and therefor you change the CEO. Look at Grant's 5 years as a business and he's had one good year and horrible results the other 4, so again in a business manner you change leadership.

I think unless Battle isn't going to take basketball seriously Grant has to be replaced.

If this was football he'd been gone long ago as exhibit a I give you Shula

I don't want to see Bruce Pearl hired but we need something done!! Grant seems to have lost this team! We are the second winningest program in SEC history!! I say we hire Wimp Sanderson back, place in his contract that he attend anger management classes and get his ass on the court with those ugly ass plaid jackets!!

I'm certainly not saying he's someone that shouldn't be looked over.

It's just a weird situation at Purdue, one I can't get a clear picture of when I try.

Did the game pass Gene Keady and that's the reason they fired him before hiring Painter? Should we take into account how rich that area is in basketball talent and assume a lot of mediocre coaches could do the same?

Here's something I can't escape. If you would have told me Kristi Curry could be hired as our women's basketball coach, I'd have told you to GTFO. With her success at TTU and...PURDUE?

:sarca:@bamaraider, I know that Wimp is up in age and long in the tooth, BUT when was the last time BAMA has been consistently worth a piss? True, what young, up and coming coach or even established coach wants to come here right now? We had the David Hobbs experiment, Mark Gottfried, and now Grant. We have made how many trips to the NCAA tourney since Wimp?

bamaraider The young assistant...that's Anthony Grant in 2007. He gets his gig at VCU with the tourney appearances and all the accolades and now we're having this discussion.

That's John Pelphey in what, 2002? He gets the job at South Alabama and in five years has that program in the dance. He goes to Arkansas and within four years he's back as an assistant coach where he started before USA; Florida.

Then we have a guy like Gregg Marshall. His route is about the same except his assistant coaching jobs were at smaller schools. While at Winthrop he was thought to be the next head coach for NC State, then accepted the job at CofC before returning to Winthrop. No doubt he's done a good job at Wichita State.

Here's one to consider; Mike Anderson. An assistant at UArk, went to UAB and then Mizzou where he enjoyed some success. Now, back at Arkansas, people are beginning to call for his head.

(Damn, here I go on a diatribe...)

It's such a crap shoot when you say, "let's go for a quality assistant." Most look at the head coach of the program they are coming from and call it a win. But, is it?

Gary Williams at Maryland: Rick Barnes was an assistant under him. He's turned out to be a pretty solid coach. But, there's a good six or seven guys that came from under Williams that haven't turned out.

Mike Krzysewski at Duke: Capel, where's he now? Dawkins, now at Stanford, is around .500 in conference play. Look at Tommy Amaker. He gets Seton Hall to the Sweet 16, two years later he gets the Michigan gig, and now he's at Harvard.

Pitino: UF's Donovan, Tubby Smith, and Jeff Van Gundy come to mind. Three out of over 20 assistants that were given a chance and couldn't produce what people wanted.

Izzo gave us Tom Creen: currently 3-5 in conference play at Indiana. There's Stan Heath from his coaching tree as well.

It's such a crap shoot when one hires that young assistant. If you start thinking about it, then look at the numbers/stats/success rate, it may be 20% of these hires end up being successful.

I'd almost bet the number is less than 20%.
I'll shut up now...

Duke probably should have let him go. He was stagnant or going backward, huh.
