My story about a team that is the Rebels as well for any who want to read it. No point, just to share.
The high school I graduated from is named Southside. Building from the "south" association, the boys sports teams are the "Rebels", the girls teams are the "Confederettes", and the mascot became Johnny Reb. Johnny, of course, is a Confederate soldier and he carried a Confederate flag. There is a huge carving of Johnny Reb in the entrance to the school. When I was a jr and sr, the NAACP took offense to our use of the flag, Johnny Reb, and the fight song, "Dixie". Apparently, a complaint was made against us by someone who didn't even live in our state and had never personally SEEN us. Just someone looking to cause trouble because we were a predominantly white school with what they saw as a racist mascot. Mind you, our African American students were just as proud of the school as anyone else and had no issues with any of it. We were no longer allowed to display the flag (it was never an official school symbol), but the student body and the community came together with rallies and prayer circles (often led by the African American students). The KKK almost messed it up by having a rally in our support, but the school officially refused their help and no one from the school attended so they were largely ignored. In the end, we gave up the flag, but got to keep Johnny Reb and Dixie. Johnny now carries an American flag. The mustang has been tossed around as an idea for a replacement mascot, but so far the principal (same one as when I graduated) says they will remain the "Rebels" as long as he is there. My son will be there in 4 years and I really hope Mr. Haver is still there. Go Southside Rebs.
ETA: The community support for us was amazing. Our band director had us play "Dixie" during the Christmas parade downtown and the crowd went wild every time.
