🏈 Favorite Bama-Tennessee memories

I'm very much in my infancy as a Bama fan, and I would love to hear stories about classic/funny moments you guys have witnessed and experienced.

All I know is it's hard for me to find anything objectionable about the Auburn and LSU fans I've come into contact with, but many Vols fans went out of their ways this offseason to look like idiots, so I'm fired up for a dominant performance this week.

My wedding day in 1979 (30 years ago today as a matter of fact) was Alabama Tennessee day. One of the wedding pictures shows me, my dad, my soon to be father in law and all of the groomsmen sitting in the sanctuary of the church about 45 minutes before the wedding, apparently in conversation. In reality there was a concealed boom box and we were listening to John Forney and Doug Layton call the game. As we went to the reception we learned that the Viles were up 17-0 at the half. (It should have been 24-0 but their QB overthrew a receiver who was 5 yards behind our safety.) As the second half began various people kept slipping into the pastors office (he had a TV there) and coming back to give us a score. We learned that Bama mounted a furious comeback in the second half, and they went on to win 28-17, earning the last of Coach Bryant's 6 NCs.

The Alabama/Tennessee rivalry has always been intense, but it once was a rivalry of grudging respect. Both schools looked at it as a measuring stick game. You played the first half of the season to get ready, then you played that game to find out how good you were. When Fulmer took over at UT from Johnny Majors the game changed to the somewhat nasty, bitter rivalry it is now.

The 89 game for me was one that I'll always remember. It was basically Siran Stacy's coming out party at the Viles expense. BAMA trounced UT 47-30 and Siran had like close to 300 all purpose yards that day.

1990 9-6 victory at Neyland. Bama came in at 2-3 and the VOLS were #2 in the land. Corso said Tenn was playing a high school team this day. Stacy Harrisons blocked FG (with roughly 2 min left) off his facemask sailed downfield like no other Ive seen before or since. This 30 yards was huge as Tide offense was mostly a non factor. Phillip Doyle booted a 47 yarder on the last play of the game to crush the VOLS (again) :td:

My first Bama game AND my first date was the 1953 game in Birmingham. Little girl and I rode the bus across town to Legion Field.

Let me add to that one(1979 game). That was the game where Coach Bryant's first words in the locker room at half time was "Men, we've got them just where we want them!" If I knew it, then he knew it. I say I knew it because I was listening to the game while doing some household chore. My wife was outside doing something, probably raking leaves. She comes in the house during halftime and asks about the game. When I tell her the score is 17-0, she asks what is wrong. When I tell her everything is all right, that Bama is winning the game, they just aren't ahead yet, she looks at me like I'm crazy and turns around and goes back outside. Well, ut had the ball for 6 plays in the third quarter and gave it to Bama, or I should say Bama took it, on 3 of them. There was a first down fumble, a first down interception, and a 3 and out fourth down punt.

I'm with Koz on the memory. I remember that game well. Saw an interview with Roger Shultz years later and he said that coach Stallings really showed his ass before the game. Team arrived at the stadium and the guest locker room was like 85 degrees. Said the heat had been running for hours and was stifling. CGS went off on some folks.

I also remember Corso picked UT to beat us like 42-0. UT was averaging over 40 points a game and we didn't have a prayer. If memory serves me correct. CGS team started 0-3 and didn't lose a game the rest of the season. That UT victory was awesome because we were BIG underdogs, but they came together and played as a team.

we lost at home (homecoming even I think) to Penn St and then got smoked in the Fiesta Bowl to Louisville in the 90 season after the UT game.



Shultz also gave the famous comment after the game at UT about Bama should pay property tax on Neyland Stadium because we own it!

Another thing I remember about the 1990 game (not sure who told me this) was that with about five minutes left we forced UT to punt and Mal Moore (then the OC) was talking with the press box about some pass plays to try to get in FG position. Stallings overheard, and with profanity that he rarely used told Moore to run the ball, that as well as the defense was playing he wasn't going to let that offense get us beat. We went three and out and kicked, leading up to the blocked FG and Phillip Doyle's finest hour.

2005, 6-3 First time I saw Bama beat UT in person. I that was my junior year at The University (as my dad calls it).

All I know is that we played great Defense, and our offense did nothing. Croyle completed a long pass late in the game to DJ Hall to set up the winning field goal. Also, if I remember correctly UT had two or three chances inside the 10 to score on us and they either missed field goals or fumbled. Nail bitter, but it was a W.

Man, I hate UT week. Crompton.....hopefully he wont turn into Jason Campbell. Suck his whole career and the all of the sudden play amazing agianst bama.

My dad was telling me about a game he went to in the 60's. Bama had drove down the field to set up a field goal to win the game. Snake was at QB. He came in on a third and long, scrambled about 15 yds and was short of the first down. He thought he had the 1st, so he got to the line, snapped the ball and spiked it to stop the clock. It was 4th down. My dad told me he remember watching the kicker throw the tee up in the air in anger. Wow, I would have hate to be Snake......Im sure coach Bryant tore him up.

Does anyone know what year that was?

One of my favorites is the 2002 game in Knoxville. Tennessee was coming in having won 7 straight over Alabama. But that night, Alabama dominated and won it 34-14. It was amazing to end the streak IN KNOXVILLE haha I loved every minute of it! I still remember listening to Eli Gold commenting near the end of the game, with a couple of minutes left, that Neyland Stadium looked a lot like Bryant Denny Stadium, 'cos most of the Vols fans had already left.....and you could just hear tons of people in the crowd singing Rammer Jammer. What an awesome game that was!

I was at this game, surrounded by a sea of orange. I had listened to how they were going to kill Bama all week, and at the end of the game I was the only one who could be heard screaming. Walking down the ramp with my dad, surrounded by literally thousands of fans, I ran my mouth continuously. I was the only one saying a single thing. Seriously. I think the ut fans were in shock. I'm probably lucky I didn't get beaten up.

The 9-6 game is my fondest memory because the Tide was such an underdog. It pays to be a fan no matter what. I have complained in the past but I'm a fan win or lose.

1965. Tied 7-7. I was at the game. I high lighted "came in" in your post because that was the whole problem. Coach Bryant was alternating QB's in that game, which always drove us fans crazy, but he was supposed to know best. Stabler always gets the blame on that play, but I blame the alternating. He was in on first down in that series. Sloan was sacked at the 18 on second down. Stabler ran 17 yards to the one on third down. Now when you are on the phone with the press box during second down and have no damn idea what is happening on the field, and you come in and run 17 yards to the one, I can see where you might think you just made a first down. Ironic about the fourth down throw away was that Ray Perkins was wide open and the ball sailed over his head. Would have been an easy TD pass. Didn't spike the ball. That would have been intentional grounding back then. Should be now. Never have figured out why they let them do that.

Koz I remember that Fiesta bowl all too well. Browning Nagle lit us up like a bag of Match light charcoal.

One of the many bowl games that Schnellenburger has never lost as a HC.
