🏈 Fall Camp Wk 3: Reports and Observations.

Suttles just posted 2 instagram videos of Coker at practice today. Videos are from a warm-up period. I realize it is just warm-ups, but take a quick peek at the location of both of the throws and you will see the glaring problem that is mentioned ad nauseum with Jake… and this is just pitch and catch, with no DB's/pass rush/etc.
I'm with Boz. I will be wholeheartedly behind whichever guy is under center. I have now seen Jake in 3 live scrimmages with extended action along with what mop up duty he had last year. The concerns remain the same. I hope I am proven wrong if he is the starter, and he's simply a 'gamer'. Unfortunately I have yet to see it.
I tried to link the videos from suttles twitter- cant make it happen. Sorry.
I tried to link it as well. A descent DB would have picked 2 of the 3 passes I saw. Inside of the reciever on a out route. But oh well. Let's see what happens.

Cyrus and Hump cemented at CB Fitzpatrick at Nickel, MO Smith and Harrison battle for Dime. Tony Brown is Fitzpatrick backup at star. Eddie at SS geno at Fs.
Pretty amazing (and impressive) that Minkah has essentially jumped Tony Brown and Maurice Smith in the matter of a few months on campus. Gotta keep em all healthy though. That's gonna be the key for the DB's.

Thanks for the update. Is Tony the first CB backup as well? If not sylve, who else? Mo Smith? Or is he being designated for those specialty nickel/dime roles?

Here's another wrinkle. What if, because he ran a variation of a read-option in high school in the Wing T, that Jake might just be our best option for that?

He's athletic enough, and big enough to be pretty durable. What if he only HAS TO throw the ball about 15-20 times a game? Because of his size and durability, maybe he does give us the best chance to score points while tayloring the offense to his strengths. Kiffin said he would tweak the O to feature the strengths of his athletes.

What if this is what he was talking about?

The veiled comments about HUSM (hurry up, smash mouth) from the staff could be revealing these possibilities.

I really hope this would be considered. The argument against it is that if they didn't run that stuff with Blake, who was an amazing runner, why would they with anyone else? The argument for it is that they valued Blake too much because he was substantially our best option, and the staff is very comfortable replacing Coker.

That read option just gives the D so much more to worry about. Even when teams have all week to prepare for it, they can't get it right. Plus, letting Coker run and throw on the run might get him out of that "heavy thinking" mentality that he apparently struggles with.

Plus, the reason we didn't see much designed run stuff with Blake last year is because he's smaller, and thereby less durable. They didn't want him getting killed by LBs and Safeties when like you said, they aren't comfortable with the backups last year.

Most of his runs early were scrambles for positive yards on pass plays. You noticed they started to sprinkle a few designed runs in later in the season after they realized how damn good he was carrying the ball in space.

I think it could work with Jake.

I love me some Jay Barker, he is a business friend of mine and a great guy but what did he do in 92 to win a game? He threw 7 count them 7 passes in the championship game and I can't remember a game that year where he threw more than 25 passes... turned out pretty well for us that year. Not saying we will win a championship.. actually I think our schedule is too brutal this year even if we had Tom Brady to go undefeated.

I would actually say this to Jay because I think he was a huge part of our success but we didn't win any games because of him but there were a couple we didn't lose because of him. I keep hearing that the QB is going to have to win us a game and how the game has changed but it is all cyclical and I think the defense could catch up this year. Plus, I think that there is something to this HUNH smash mouth style that Boz had said. Coach Saban goes even more secretive than normal, institutes the sideline flashcards like spread teams, doesn't have a dominant QB and has let a couple little comments slip about no huddle and playing fast.. I think he is up to something.

This type of style would not require a stud QB to win a game we can win with and athletic QB.. "Jay Barker..ish"

Jay is one of my favorite Bama QBs ever. It is a tribute to him and his hard work, as well as to Homer Smith, that by 1994 Jay was, of necessity making plays and winning games for us.

He is one of only two SEC quarterbacks whose last play as a college player was a game winning touchdown pass for his team. As a trivia question, who is the other one?

QB has been Coker job to lose and looks like he hasn't. He's been no 1 the whole way. He been 1 in all the qb drills. Saban will pick
whoever gives us the best chance at winning, looks like hes got some good backups in MORRIS and BATEMAN. Ihope they redshirt BARNETT.

That's kind of the problem. It shouldn't have been "his to lose." He should have had to win it just like anyone else.

All of you will see what me and the people who went to the scrimmages are talking about in 9 days and especially when we play Ole Miss. I'll leave it at that. He has all the looks, great arm, can run alittle, but wind up and decision making is slow. This won't matter against Wisconsin, MTSU, etc but against Ole Miss and LSU it will be a totally different ball game. And those hard decisions and quick throws will be the ball game. Unless we run all over everyone and have the 2012 OL we will need the above. Mark that down.

Then wtf are we starting him? There must be some reason unless he's got pics of Saban and Hillary.

Maybe that's the idea. A lot of Jake's problem is his decision-making, so Kiffin will show him a cartoon character of where to throw it to. No decision other than remembering what Garfield means.

@Tidestalker and @Sgt. Lincoln Osiris, I think you guys don't understand the complexity of the read option. That shit has to be practiced everyday and twice on Friday! Meshpoints ( where the ball is between back and QB )are crucial. Finding the read man, reading give or keep. Is it the NG, 1 tech, 3 tech? Is it inside option or outside? If outside, who is the 5 tech, or 7 tech? Who do I read on the pitch? Pitch relationships are a bitch too!
Then you have to teach another blocking schem as well! As CNS has said, "we just need to do what we do! Aight!

Coker is definitely late on the instagram throws. Only 2 throws in practice... But I tend to believe Boz when he says its a consistent issue.

All I can think is the staff is giving him the first shot cause he's a good guy, his teammates respect him, and he's a senior who may improve quickly with game experience. That throwing motion is just so long, that if you don't see the play ahead of time, it's hard to be on time. Not sure "seeing the play ahead of time" is going to be his strength.

I have little to no doubt that the staff will not be shuffling QB's most of the season. Still can win big though... Big throws as the right time!

As in, last play of college career?

Just read the backside DE after the snap, bruh. A-la Tebow and Florida a few years ago.

Put Drake in the slot, motion him across the formation pre-snap. If corners are playing soft, hand it to the Drake. If a corner goes or shifts with him, look for the dive with King Henry. If the backside DE crashes inside, keep it to the outside.

We're talking zone-read spread here, bro. Not Notre Dame Box shit.

Let him play on senior day then. I hate to think we are okay blowing the season based on loyalty to a transfer.
