He won't make stupid mistakes during the games.

He's already made a stupid mistake during a game ... last year he cost us points (at least a field goal) at the end of the second quarter against FAU when he took a sack with only seconds remaining in the half. We were on the FAU four-yard line.

I don't care who the QB is, as long as he gives us the best chance to win. If it's Coker, that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about him, but there are concerns with every option we have.

He won't make stupid mistakes during the games. He didnt have any turnovers when he played in garbage time last season. Saban is not going to put a qb out there that he knows is going to make turnovers. Most likely Coker has shed his gunslinger mentality and has bought in to a Saban style qb. If not we have the quintessential game manager in Morris waiting in the wings.

Do you really know Saban? Ask him if I can get a couple of pics with him. As for me, I'm an arm chair QB not an arm chair coach. CNS makes a hell of a lot more than I do and I'm pretty darn sure he knows a little more about the game and about coaching than I do. So, if he thinks JC is ready to go and trots him out there first, I will support my QB.

You're right. Let's tell Terry to shutdown this thing. No point in discussing football on a message board since the coaches are infallible.

Clearly "knowing Saban" meant based on his past public actions. He is not one to pull starting QBs. I thought WAers were supposed to be the rude ones? May as well go to Tidefans if questioning coaching decisions is verboten here.

Dude, don't worry, he don't message board.

My personal opinion on Coker. When the starting job was up for grabs last year, Blake Sims shined when the "lights" were on, and Coker looked like he was crumbling under the stress. The Florida game, when Blake went out, and was the established starter, I thought Coker looked good. It was like, now that the pressure was off, and he was not "over thinking" every pass, he played better. Much like the snippet somebody posted from Bull Durham. I believe, Coker "over thinks". Again, this is just my personal opinion, based on general observations. There are so many on this board, that have first hand knowledge, have the time to analyze everything. I definitely defer to ya'll! :-)

The thing with Coker is, when he's good, he's the best we've got with the probable exception of Kid Barnett. But when he's bad, he makes mistakes that hurt. Not missing a receiver mistakes, but throwing a ball late over the middle into coverage mistakes. Mistakes that will cost you. My guess is that Saban and Lane trot Coker out there against Wiskey with a very vanilla, watered-down game plan that is heavy on runs, play action, one receiver routes, and designated target routes. He will have very little authority to audible and will be beaten over the head with the mantra, "if it ain't there, don't force it!"

They did something similar to start the game against WVU last year until they saw how Blake responded and what he could handle and slowly fed more bits and pieces into the gameplan. It was ugly but it worked last year and I think they kept slowly ramping it up until I'd say the Florida game where we were sort of forced to open it up a little, but Blake was in a groove by then and picked it up well. Maybe Coker can follow suit.

Boz, anything to add?

Saban did the same thing with AJ. We always start out heavy run and play action with a new qb.

Dude, @Snout Spout, I know what you meant, I was just yankin' Your chain. Worked pretty good too. We still have 8 days and a few hours before we actually know what any of our qb's will do at game time. Sit back and relax.

I think this staff has a pretty good track record, as far as evaluating talent. Last year was the first time in a while that I was nervous about their choice at QB. Their choice wound up breaking all kinds of records at Alabama and damn near got us to the National Championship. If Jake is the man, he will start. If not, you can bet your behind that whoever is in there, will be the one who gives us the best chance to win this year. Next year?... rinse and repeat.

QB has been Coker job to lose and looks like he hasn't. He's been no 1 the whole way. He been 1 in all the qb drills. Saban will pick
whoever gives us the best chance at winning, looks like hes got some good backups in MORRIS and BATEMAN. Ihope they redshirt BARNETT.
