Monday Insider Report: Practice No. 9 | BamaInsider.com
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama held its second evening practice of preseason camp Monday as players practiced wore full pads under clear, 81-degree weather. Monday night’s workout was the ninth of a total of 20 preseason practices this fall. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.
— Najee Harris was not with the rest of Alabama’s running backs during the viewing period. There were reports Saturday that Harris injured his leg. Although, that was not mentioned by head coach Nick Saban during his post-scrimmage news conference.
— Alabama appeared to shake up its offensive line with Alex Leatherwood working at the guard position while Jedrick Wills moved to tackle.
— Freshman Ale Kaho was again wearing shorts and a shirt during practice as he takes part in the NCAA’s acclimation process. Kaho will be able to wear shoulder pads the next two practices before he is allowed to dress out in full pads on Thursday.
— Alabama’s secondary worked in two groups out of the nickel package. On one side of the field, Trevon Diggs played outside corner with Shyheim Carter at Star and Xavier McKinney at safety. The other side of the field had Saivion Smith at outside corner with Kyriq McDonald at Star and Deionte Thompson at safety. Those two groups could end up representing Alabama’s dime formation with McDonald taking the Money role.
— A third grouping consisted of Josh Jobe at outside corner, Patrick Surtain II at Star and Jared Mayden at safety.
— As expected, outside linebacker Jamey Mosley and safety Daniel Wright were both absent from scrimmage. Saban said both players are dealing with shoulder injuries.
— Anfernee Jennings led the outside linebackers, followed by Christian Miller, Christopher Allen, Jarez Parks, Cameron Latu, Eyabi Anoma and Ben Davis. It looks like Davis will continue to stay with the outside linebackers now that Kaho is with the inside group.
— Monday's practice didn't give much insight into the quarterback battle. Jalen Hurts and Tua Tagovaila continued to alternate while throwing with receivers.
