🏈 Fall Camp thread - 2018! --Updates from scrimmage #2

I hate to be that guy (no I dont) but yeah, the guy that got criticized all the time for being "too safe" totally threw 3 picks in the scrimmage. Sure...

So now people are lying about Jalens performance at practice ? I've heard the same report from several that were in attendance, and none of them have any reason to lie. Will Lowery played DB at UA, and he knows his football. He said the QB competition is "not even close."

Anyone willing to be objective arrived at the same conclusion a long time ago.

There's only one person that said that. One. If it was Lowery that said it, I wouldn't have questioned it. As you noticed, I didn't question a single thing Lowery said.

Some takeaways, intel from Alabama's scrimmage

*** The two top inside linebackers, Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses, both played "really, really well," according to coach Nick Saban. They were active, physical and Moses picked off Jalen Hurts late in the practice.

*** The last note is also secondary-related. Saivion Smith, who will likely start at cornerback, seems to have had a good scrimmage and had an early interception of Hurts.

Several young players stand out, other takeaways from Alabama's scrimmage

My real concern is... Who didn't pick off Hurts?

Not trying to get into another worthless debate with you, but there have been more sources than I care to name come out and say that Tua is in another league than Jalen. When people are saying things like "its not close," or "completely different skill set" as it relates to one guy can see the field and make throws, and the other has never been able to do that with any consistency one has to wonder how you've remained seemingly in the dark about this situation for so long. As if learning that Tua is far ahead of Hurts in camp is a big shocker for you the likes of which you have a hard time accepting.

BTW, why are you not excited about having a talent like Tua ? The story here is not about Hurts losing the job; the story here is how Tua has won the team - that is if you want what is best for the team, and bias or personal feelings/allegiance do not cloud your judgement.

That is what has confused me about your take on this situation going back to last year. Anyone watching this through an unbiased lens could see Tua was the future. Again, the two players bring vastly different skill sets, and one is far superior than the other when it comes to distributing the football to the playmakers.

Anyhow, Hurts losing the job is not a conspiracy. He did this to himself. Even he has admitted that. I hope you are able to accept this sooner than later as it appears you are one of the last in all of Bama nation to come in out of the rain.

Didn't dispute the claims from others, other than supposedly Jalen is throwing picks all over the place. One thing Jalen has been known for is NOT doing that. I also remember the hype around Jalen... and Coker... and Cooper Bateman... so, I have learned to take every single insider source with a tiny grain of salt.

I am very excited for Tua and his potential. I also know the expectations everyone is putting on him is virtually impossible for any QB to live up to.

You're the only person that mentioned a conspiracy, so I have no clue what you're getting at with that and I also don't know what I'm not accepting. I even said last week that I had changed my stance on who will start game one.

Jalen threw picks. It's that simple.

You seemed to be hinting that there was no way Hurts was turning the ball over. Since there are more than a couple of sources claiming he has, it would be the definition of a "conspiracy" if they had agreed to create that narrative out-of-thin-air to Hurt Jalens standing with the fanbase. (which is obviously nonsense)

It's easy to see why Hurts is turning the ball over. He is competing against a guy that understands where to go with the ball presnap. He knows where the open receiver is going to be, or he finds the open receiver by the time his back foot hits turf on his drop. Hurts can no longer get away with running to the right sideline when the guy he is competing with completes a pass downfield under the same circumstances.

Its clear Hurts has nothing to lose in this competition, and he has to take his shots. Thats why he is turning the ball over. Like everyone has been trying to tell you for months - Jalen simply can not see the field. So now that Tua is forcing him to stand in the pocket, and try his best to get the ball out he is making mistakes because he has no idea where to go with the football, and even if he does figure it out, (and I'm not wanting to bash or pile on here) it's often too late. Hes either taking a sack, running, or the window of opportunity has closed.

Got this a few minutes ago in my email.

Camp notes: Tide looking very good so far
Eight days into August camp one thing very clear is that this Alabama team is once again loaded with talent. Some of the talent is young and inexperienced, but still very promising. Here some notes from camp.

--At QB, by all accounts Tua Tagovailoa had a big day. At one point in the scrimmage, I received a text that Tua "almost" threw a pick. On the next two plays, he bounced back with a nice 25-yard strike to tight end Kedrick James for a big gain and then another pass to James for a TD. Tua finished with "three or four" TD passes.

--Speaking of Kedrick James, since the first time I watched his high school tape, I have really liked this kid (and, no, not because he is from Texas). He just jumps out at you with his size, hands and his ability to move. Looked at him up close before the scrimmage on Saturday. Kid is 6-5, 255 or so. He is put together. In the scrimmage, he had a handful of catches, including two TDs. The kid is going to be really good.

--Watching the other tight ends, MIller Forristall caught my eye. He missed most of last season with the ACL surgery, but he used his off time very well. Looks bigger and better than he has since he's been here. He's one of those guys who just has a knack for the game. Can get open and make some plays.

--BTW, I am not forgetting Hale Hentges, who is going into his fourth season of being a solid contributor. And Irv Smith, who can be a star. Rising soph Major Tenninson is a good-looking young player as well. Impressive tight end group.

--Sounds like Henry Ruggs, Jeudy and DeVonta Smith have all taken it to another level. Ruggs, who was so productive as a freshman, is really just learning how to play WR. Last December, Clemson HC Dabo Swinney suppaedly told several people the Jeudy was the most impressive WR his staff had seen on tape. Got a text during the scrimmage that Smith was looking very good.

--TI has raved about Jaylen Waddle for a long time. We continue to hear that he is the real deal at slot receiver. There is a good chance that he will be the punt return man from day one. If not, it probably won't be long. Kid is going to be very exciting.

--TI has said several times throughout the summer and early camp that Bama might have gotten a steal in freshman WR Xavier Williams. He made a couple of big plays in the Fan Day practice that caught my eye.

--Redshirt freshman Tyrell Shavers gives Bama a different look. At 6-6, 215, he's a big, athletic target. In the red zone, Shavers and Kedrick James on the field together would present some nightmares for defenses. Shavers had a TD reception from Tua in the scrimmage.

--In the TI video update on Thursday, we said that Chadarius Townsend is kind of a forgotten man. Kid is athletic, fast, quick and he is not intimidated by competition. He was with the second group at slot on Saturday.

--TI said before camp that soph Alex Leatherwood might just have too much potential to keep off the field. Matt Womack's spring foot injury might have opened the door for Leatherwood to steal the RT spot. During every media viewing period in camp Leatherwood has lined up with the first OL group.

--On the DL, we know about Isaiah Buggs, Quinnen Williams and Raekwon Davis. We think LaBryan Ray is going to eventually become a star. He's now 290+. TI has always been high on the potential of redshirt freshman Phidarian Mathis. If you recall, following the Fan Day practice, TI mentioned Mathis as a player who really caught my eye. He has made a lot.of phyiscal strides over the last year. We have also mentioned freshman Stephon Wynn (out with an injury) as having made some strides physically since the spring. Throw in Johnny Dwight and Tevita Musika and this could become a very good rotation.

--With Terrell Lewis out, three young outside backers we continue to hear very good things about are soph Chris Allen and freshmen Jarez Parks and Eyabi Anoma. All three are flashing as pass rushers. Really like this trio. Allen has also gotten some reps inside. Freshman Cameron Latu is also impressive on the hoof.

--Speaking of the inside, we know that Dylan Moses and Mack Wilson have star potential. Obviously, depth is a big concern. That's why Chris Allen and Christian Miller have both gotten some reps here in camp. If you recall, in TI's Fab Five newcomers reports this summer, we listed inside backer Jaylen Moody as one of the top incoming players that we felt would make a contribution. We said he might be the "steal" of the 2018 class. By all accounts, including some feedback from Mack Wilson and Dylan Moses, Moody has been very impressive in camp. He supposedly flashed several times in the scrimmage, including having an interception.

--On the addition of five-star true freshman inside backer Brandon (Ale) Kaho, if you have not watched TI's video update we posted following the scrimmage, check out the last minute of the update for video of Kaho. Kid is very athletic. A lot of tools. He's 6-2, 220. He might lend some depth this season. But with a year under Scott Cochran, Kaho could become a beast.

--Obviously Alabama lost a lot talent in the secondary. The players competing for spots now are mostly inexperienced. But I will say this, speaking strictly from an athletic standpoint, I think this group is superior overall to the group that just departed (obviously, Minkah Fitzpatrick is the exception).

--At corner, first teamers Trevon Diggs and Saivion Smith, along with freshmenPatrick Surtain (also working at star), Josh Jobe (superior man cover skills/has lit to learn) and Jalyn Armour-Davis, are an impressive group of athletes.

--Staying in the secondary at safety, TI has stated several times that we are very impressed with the athleticism and playmaking ability of Deionte Thompson. In an update this summer, TI listed soph safety Xavier "X-man" McKinney as one of our five players to watch in camp. He's headed for big things.

--TI was told that Temple grad transfer Austin Jones was five of six on FG attempts in the scrimmage. Supposedly he hit a couple from 50+ yards. His only miss was from 52. In his career at Temple, Jones was 50 of 67 on FGs. Joseph Bulovas is also in the mix here.

--As for punting, the buzz is that freshman Syler DeLong has made good strides since the spring. But TI is also hearing that senior Mike Bernier of Madison-Bob Jones has turned some heads in camp.

--It looks like Trevon Diggs and Jaylen Waddle will be top punt return options. On kickoff returns, Diggs and Josh Jacobs might be the most likely deep men.

--Overall, it sounds like special teams guru Jeff Banks is doing a great job with the specialists and the coverage and return teams.

-- Sophomore running back Najee Harris wasn't present during the viewing period. Word is that Harris suffered an injury during the Crimson Tide's scrimmage on Saturday, though we're not sure yet of the specifics of the injury. Coach Nick Saban didn't mention Harris while discussing injuries after the scrimmage, which could mean that the injury isn't serious. At latest, we'll have an update on Thursday when Saban has his next press conference.

-- Harris wasn't the only running back not participating in drills. Neither was Brian Robinson, at least for part of the media viewing period. While he was in uniform and on the practice field, Robinson stood off to the side as the other running backs went through drills during the part of running back drills I watched.

-- Backup outside linebacker Jamey Mosley, who is working back from a separated shoulder, wasn't present during the media viewing period. Neither was reserve safety Daniel Wright, who is dealing with a more serious shoulder issue that has his status for this season in question.
