🏈 Fall Camp reports/articles/links

He is a mammoth. Can't help but wonder how the staff decided on DT instead of OT... Cause that body is taylor made for a first round left tackle.

Sure hope he's good academically. It feels like he or Jonny Dwight will need to eat up some snaps... Especially as the season progresses.

Made me think of another goliath that should be at UA... Kendall Jones... He was like 6'4 350 and did not look fat. Damn

Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris led the running back drills. Derrick Gore and Ronnie Clark were next up followed by Joshua Jacobs and B.J. Emmons.
Versus another report from the same viewing period.

  • Nothing has changed in the RB lineup during media viewing. Bo Scarbrough leads the drills, with Damien Harris and freshmen Joshua Jacobs and B.J. Emmons up next.
  • Emmons was a standout in summer work and and has had a strong August. The former North Carolina prep star has size, speed and power.
  • A bit of a surprise has been how quickly Joshua Jacobs is making the adjustment. As a senior at Tulsa-McLain, OK last season, Jacobs ran for 2,704 yards and 38 TDs on just 179 carries
  • and he did it as a QB. Since the end of the season, Jacobs has added about 20 solid pounds. Now in the 215-pound range, Jacobs is a tough runner with excellent speed, quickness and vision. He's turned a lot of heads over the past few weeks.
  • I think all four backs will have a role this season.
From TI's observations~

I liked how Boz "or whoever came up with it" called the offense HUNH Smashmouth.

What makes Alabama offense unlike the others in Nick Saban era

Saban hinted at the possibilities this depth creates.

"They can be more involved in different roles in the game," Saban said. "We can actually save and alternate our players so they don't get tired in the game, especially when you go no-huddle. Most of these no-huddle teams if you watch them they alternate a little bit. They're skill players because it is a stress on them. They run a take-off route 40 yards down the field, sometimes they come off and somebody else goes in for them. But to be able to do that is really, really important."

Practice Report, August 25, Suttles:

The team worked indoors Thursday afternoon in a hot Tuscaloosa, where the feels-like temperature was 104 at the start of practice. Here is what I noticed during the media viewing period.

I've been hearing a lot of recent buzz (meaning this week) about true freshman running back Joshua Jacobs. He's one to watch. We never make too much of the order of drills but Jacobs was working ahead of B.J. Emmons during the media viewing period. In order it was: Bo Scarbrough, Damien Harris, Derrick Gore, Joshua Jacobs and B.J. Emmons. It's something I'll keep my eyes on going forward.

The defensive line started outside on the practice fields before joining the rest of the team indoors.

Nothing has changed on the offensive line or in the order of the offensive line or the quarterbacks. It was still Cooper Batemen followed by Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts. David Cornwell continues to be limited by his foot.

Awesome news on Jacobs. I think the concern in transitioning to the SEC level was always his size... But the kid is really quick and hard to get a hold of. I want to say people were seeing some LeSean McCoy style in his game. Reading that he put on 20 lbs already is awesome. Super excited to have 2 freshman ready for a shot. RTR

Yeah, I read he was up to 210 or 215. That's good size now. He and Emmons are physically more than ready.

Al.com practice report:

—Receiver Cam Sims was still wearing a sleeve over his left knee as he practiced. Meanwhile, Keith Holcombe was working with the linebacker group as the crew lined up for a drill with a football sled.

—Cornerback Tony Brown had what looked to be a bandage over his right leg.

—The first-team nickel defense featured Anthony Averett, Minkah Fitzpatrick and Marlon Humphrey at cornerback. Ronnie Harrison and Eddie Jackson were the safeties. Reuben Foster and Shaun Dion Hamilton were the linebackers. Rashaan Evans, who had been at that spot Hamilton was occupying, was taking part in another drill before joining Holcombe at linebacker on a second-team version of the same formation.

—In one of the nickel formations the Tide rolled out, Fitzpatrick moved from the Star position to the outside. Hootie Jones and Harrison were the safeties while Jackson replaced Fitzpatrick at Star.

Al.com Nick Saban presser notes:

— Saban: I think our offensive system is pretty flexible. We take pride in adapting to what our players can do, and that starts at quarterback.

— Saban on practice: You guys probably think practice is about practicing until you get something right. I think practicing is about doing it until you can't get it wrong.

— Saban said he doesn't know yet whether freshman defensive lineman Raekwon Davis will be academically eligible.

— Saban said he hasn't picked a starting quarterback yet. Said all three quarterbacks have gotten reps this week.

— Saban said he hasn't decided yet whether Alphonse Taylor will play in the first game stemming from his DUI arrest during the summer.

— Alphonse Taylor has missed the last two days with an undisclosed injury.

— Saban: We're starting preparation for USC tomorrow, so we need to make depth chart-related decisions.

— Saban: The players have done well after the two days off. The energy level has been good.

I guess we should start to get some answers regarding depth in the next few days. Sure seems like Bozeman will be the man at RG vs USC, no reason to believe otherwise... Especially with Taylor missing the last few days.

Only other question really is MLB and how they are going to rotate those 3. Seems like Evans will play the pass and SDH will play the run.. Or vice versa... But really like having 3 good options to rotate. Wouldn't shock me to see Mack Wilson slide in if there are injuries... Heard some good things about him on the radio this morning.

He will release the Depth Chart Monday like every year I would imagine. And he is going to troll us all by having "Cooper Bateman or Blake Barnett or Jalen Hurts" listed at QB like he did last year lol

Smashmouth football, and Saban talking about depth with the wide receivers? I don't get the comparison.

It don't 12gage. I'M too fired up. I found this article and snippet sums what I was thinking. "The snippet came from the Imagining a Jalen Hurts-Alabama offense link below the snippet.

In 2015 Alabama lost the ability to mix in QB runs with Jake Coker at the helm but were still able to use the threat of quick throws and bubble screens on the outside to create space for Henry to do work. A Heisman trophy followed and when aggressive teams in the playoffs dared Alabama to beat them with those quick throws they were able to oblige.
