🏈 Fall Camp reports/articles/links

I believe he's torn his ACL at least once in high school (maybe twice?). For a guy who's never played a legit snap in CF, he's taken some lumps.

And? So he tore his ACL in high school, had cramps on the first day and got "dinged up" in a scrimmage that means he's "porcelain Bo"? And how has a guy that had nearly 20 carries last season "never played a legit snap in CF?" Are you trying to say that he's never had a "meaningful" carry in a game? I believe he even got some carries in the Cotton Bowl and NCG.

Saban didn't. I don't know how good of a snapshot we'd get as it was. A lot of situational work, ya know?

Hurts didn't have a great day passing, 1 for 4 I believe for a short gain. Cooper was 12 for 19 with one and one. I can't say how accurate those are.

There was mention of Griffith going 3 for 4 today.

Another observers stats:

-Hurts took an even amount of reps with 1's with both BB8 and Cooper Bateman
-Cornwell is still not healthy and did not get one single rep
-Now, some stats...Hurts had 3 TD's and one INT and looked great
-Bateman nor BB8 scored a TD
-Cooper threw a pick 6 in the scrimmage and Blake threw 2 INT's in 7v7
These did not include ANY red zone work
*Some of this stuff may have already been posted

WTF :bandhead: You cant have two any more different "observations" than those two. So did one of those ppl take a shit during the whole scrimmage or something? I highly doubt Hurts threw just 5 passes the entire scrimmage.

This is what CrimsonBoz posted over on the Rant:

Bateman, made some nice plays, had two really bad picks, one was a pick six. Did ok on goal line, nothing great but did not look comfortable in the pocket and obviously was throwing them into heavy traffic for gifts

Barnett, also made some good plays had a nice td pass. Didn't use his legs at all and he isn't really all that fast which may surprise some of you. His speed in high school doesn't translate to this, had a bad pick he basically pulled a Chad Kelly but no helmet bounce.

Hurts was by far the best looking qb, he is electric, kid has wheels, is calm and collected in the pocket. He makes nice reads, he goes read 1 check to 2 and then runs so fluid. Shocked the absolute hell out of me. He threw a huge bomb to foster 50+, ran a read option 45 yards, and another td in the air.

1st D looked good, 2nd and 3rd team was mix matched so it was mostly 2nd guys in when people mentioned 3rd team and some 1st team. Secondary was totally mixed up a lot tons of personnel on and off. AA got the first look at corner.

Rueben Foster looked much quicker and Evans left the field he looked a little dizzy is the best way to say that

Shank took first team reps after Bozeman warmed up there and they switched out for 1st team reps . Mayden, shef and carter took a lot of reps as well

Harris and emmons looked good but Jacobs looked excellent kid is really quick. Bo was good for a limited time.

So bottom line I think the QB is still batemans to lose but hurts def passed BB. My opinion and that of everyone there is hurts is absolutely the real deal. This is def a qb competition it has to be. Hurts took the 1's and drove the field with absolute ease it was like 15 pass then 10 yard run back and forth. Looked great.

Okay... Im not going to get on CrimsonBoz here... but if that is true... if all of that really happened. How can you, with a straight face, say "the QB is still Bateman's to lose." According to him Bateman looked like shit and Hurts is the second coming of Michael Vick so why would it be Bateman's to lose? Thats why this time of year is so frustrating. Everyone claims to be an insider and you have no idea who to believe and not to believe. This time last year Boz was saying Alec Morris looked incredible and was going to be the starter so...

According to Matt Zenitz (AL.com)... big difference in Hurts playing against the 1s and playing against the 3s...

The media isn't allowed to watch Tide scrimmages. However, sources told AL.com that Hurts had a touchdown run of around 50 yards and a nicely-thrown scoring pass of around 50 yards to wide receiver Robert Foster against Alabama's third-team defense. He also led a long drive into the red zone vs. the first-team defense during a two-minute drill before throwing an interception with no time left on the clock. Those weren't Hurts' only impressive moments Saturday.

quote:
Bateman, according to sources, threw two interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown by freshman defensive back Shyheim Carter. He also threw two touchdowns during the red zone portion of practice while working with the first-team offense. Barnett had long completions to ArDarius Stewart and Foster in addition to a touchdown to Stewart while working with the first-team offense.

quote:
Barnett threw an interception during a two-minute drill period, but it was under similar circumstances as Hurts'. Time was running out and no one was open.

A-List No. 4: Northridge RB Bo Scarbrough aiming for first injury-free season (video) - From 2013
Scarbrough has yet to play a full season of high school football. He broke his ankle in his freshman season, tore his ACL as a sophomore and suffered a high-ankle sprain last year. All three injuries cut his seasons short.

Bo Scarbrough to return after injury, suspension - From 2015
Scarbrough, an Alabama-native, was rated as a five-star athlete in the 2014 class by Rivals.com, but was academically ineligible to play during the 2014 season. He was eligible for spring practice, but tore his ACL in April.

So he had a broken ankle in high school, tore his ACL, had a high ankle sprain (that cut season short), and tore his ACL the first year of Spring practice. That is where my concerns come from, more so than the cramps and minor injury today. Although it does add to the trend.

You're right, I was referring to a meaningful carry. And more so the fact that he has yet to be tested physically in a college season, after he demonstrated to be injury prone in high school to the point he never made it through a full season.

I certainly wouldn't call him "Porcelain Bo" but don't expect him to be near as reliable as the other studs we've been lucky to watch.

That's the beautiful thing about reading over different scrimmage obs. And just like fans obs, you can easily find media reports leaving you asking, "WTF?" The C&W had me laughing a bit yesterday with their headline that Saban was looking for better decision making based on him saying he didn't see any real bad plays.

@Tidestalker was curious about the stats. I think we found out a long time ago the stats released seldom tell the story of what happened in a scrimmage.

To me, when I read over all of the observations, it seems the team is right where we all thought they were before the scrimmage. No significant news, no real changes in the depth chart ... things just, well, rollin' along.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — To the surprise of no one there’s still no clear front-runner for the University of Alabama’s starting quarterback job—or at least no one head coach Nick Saban is ready to name.

Days after he hinted that the two training camp scrimmages might go a long way in determining who will get the nod for the season opener against Southern California (Sept. 3 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas), Saban was deliberately vague after the first one at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday.

“It sort of gave us a good idea who might be most ready to manage the team, but I think that decision is far from getting made,” was about all that Saban offered to reporters.

No statistics were released for the closed scrimmage, part of which was played in a downpour.

During the brief media observation period, when players went through individual drills, the pecking order at quarterback remained, in order, junior Cooper Bateman, redshirt freshman Blake Barnett and true freshman Jalen Hurts, although Saban said that all thee got a chance to play with the first-, second- and third-team offenses.

Sophomore David Cornwell is still somewhat limited due to a foot injury.

“He did some really good things out there today,” Saban said when specifically asked about Hurts. “I think he does really good things each and every day. I think the key for both younger guys is consistency in performance, taking care of the ball and taking what the defense gives and being satisfied with that.

“I think that all three guys have done a good job of not looking over their shoulder in terms of what the other guy is doing and trying to focus on what they need to do to improve and get better. So, we’re encouraged by the progress.”

The most telling thing about the scrimmage may have been Saban’s demeanor during his press conference; he was in a good mood.

Injury update

Although Alabama still has three weeks to go before its opener, the reigning national champions appear to be off to a good start on the injury front with no one having had a major setback during training camp.

Saban announced that senior defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson suffered a sprained ankle during Saturday’s scrimmage and might miss a few practices. Junior defensive end Da’Shawn Hand was held out for an undisclosed reason but could be back for Monday’s final two-a-day practices.

“A couple other guys got little, small, light concussions, but we’ll go through the concussion protocol with them,” he added. “I’m not sure that any of them are really, really serious, but we’re going to take every precaution before they get back. Hopefully that won’t be long.”

Running game concerns

Outside of the quarterback competition, the biggest question mark regarding the offense is at running back, where Alabama has to replace Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake, and sophomore Ronnie Clark is out with a torn Achilles.

The returning players have just 64 carries for 283 yards, all by sophomores Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris last season.

“Bo looked good early, got a little dinged so he didn't practice as much or have as many carries, probably,” Saban said. “The young guys, I think, all did a pretty decent job.”

In addition to depth concerns, as junior Derrick Gore is dealing with a sprained knee and freshman Josh Jacobs a thigh contusion, Scarbrough has a history of injuries. However, Saban singled out true freshman B.J. Emmons, calling him a hard worker and instinctive runner.

“I think they're all gonna make a contribution to the team this year,” Saban said.

•Alabama is still trying different combinations on the offensive line, but the only starting spot up for grabs may be at right guard, where junior Bradley Bozeman and senior Alphonse Taylor both took snaps Saturday. Taylor started last season only to be demoted during the spring and arrested for a DUI over the summer. Overall, Saban said that the line is healthier and has more depth than a year ago.

•True freshman Jonah Williams has been the first-unit right tackle all camp. “Jonah Williams has done a really, really good job,” Saban said. “He’s gotten a little bigger. He’s gotten a little stronger. He’s smart. He’s confident.”

•Alabama’s defense was already expected to be much faster, but in part due to knee pain, senior interior linebacker Reuben Foster has dropped 15 pounds. He played at roughly 240 last year, was at 235 in the spring and is now at 225. “I’m more explosive. It might sound strange, 225 at linebacker but it feels great,' he said. "Knees not hurting, back not hurting.”

•Something to watch next week is the secondary as Alabama has been experimenting at star—the fifth defensive back in the nickel formation when the strong-side linebacker is pulled in obvious passing situations. Saban would prefer not to have sophomore Minkah Fitzpatrick start at cornerback and slide over to star when necessary, but with Tony Brown missing the first few games due to a suspension, it may depend on redshirt freshman cornerback Kendall Sheffield’s progress.

•His new teammates are saying a lot of good things about wide receiver Gehrig Dieter, a graduate transfer from Bowling Green. “Gehrig’s really smart,” wide receiver ArDarius Stewart said. “He’s getting it real fast.”

•Saban on next week, which will culminate with another Saturday scrimmage: “What we need to do is get the good players playing really, really well. We’ve got to get the younger players and the backup players to play with a lot more consistency so they can develop a role on this team so that we have more guys that can go in there and contribute and play winning football. That’s the key to the drill.”

Suttles: MONDAY MORNING PRACTICE:

The team worked in full pads for its first practice after Saturday's scrimmage. Here is what I noticed during the media viewing period.

Dalvin Tomlinson wore a boot on his right foot after sustaining a sprained ankle during Saturday's scrimmage. He rode the bike during the media viewing portion of practice. After being held out of the scrimmage, junior defensive lineman Da'Shawn Hand was at practice and did participate.

Bo Scarbrough got a "little dinged" during the scrimmage but he too went through practice with no issues. Damien Harris worked behind him followed by B.J. Emmons and Joshua Jacobs.

First-year offensive line coach Brent Key was considerably more vocal this morning than he has been in the past. It may be me reading too much into the situation, but I can imagine him not being overly pleased with the offensive line's performance in the scrimmage. Post-scrimmage Nick Saban pointed out the offense needs to run the ball with more consistency.

Bradley Bozeman was still working with the first-team offensive line. Saban mentioned both Bozeman and Alphonse Taylor when discussing the right side of the offensive line after the scrimmage. That tells me Taylor's right there in the competition. It's something to watch going forward. A side note on the offensive line: No. 76 Scott Lashley passes the eyeball test. Kid is big and appears to have good footwork. He's one to watch in coming years.

From Ben Jones
The dime package today had true freshman Jared Mayden at the corner opposite Marlon Humphrey with Ronnie Harrison and Eddie Jackson at safety and Minkah Fitzpatrick and Shyheim Carter at Star and Money, respectively.

Trevon Diggs was running with the 2s at safety and Tony Brown with the corners. They're moving a lot of guys around during these practices.

Rashaan Evans wasn't fully participating but he was at practice.

Well, we reached 10 pages, so Hurts is now declaring for the draft. We only have Bateman and Barnett to choose from now.

Very Nice!!

Ok sorry everyone for the delay but had a busy weekend and Monday so far so I am just getting to post. I actually had a friend who is a former player I was talking to on Saturday and he had a buddy who was at the scrimmage Saturday. We called him while he was driving home and got the scoop. My sunday school teacher will be at next Saturday's scrimmage so I will pump him for opinions then. ( He has been warned)

Here is what I got from this Saturday...

- Hurts looks to be the most dynamic QB on the field (said most of the time he looked like that was against the 3's but you can see the talent
- said Scarborough looked great while he was in there
- Also said that the 2 freshman runners both looked really good said especially Emmons
- that Marlon Humphrey looked like an All American but that the whole Secondary looked awesome
- Christan Miller will be on the field sooner rather than later
- Bateman looks over matched compared to the other two
- Said Rashan Evans left with a concussion type injury that I haven't seen reported anywhere and said Rueben Foster looked really good
- Also picked up that Cam Sims may be ahead of Robert Foster for the third wide receiver spot

So nothing super new from what I have read except for a few.. but these are opinions of what was seen. I personally would like to see Barnett get his chance but if Hurts continues to impress and gives us the best chance then so be it. My only fear is that it would cause at least two and maybe 3 transfers if Hurts won it and would probably only cause 1 if Barnett wins it. If it is close go with the extra year in the system and let Hurts continue to develop.

my two cents...

-- Former five-star cornerback Kendall Sheffield was not spotted for a second straight practice Monday evening. The Missouri City, Texas product did not see action in his true freshman season last fall but drew strong reviews from upper classmen like Cyrus Jones.

-- Linebacker Keith Holcombe wasn't doing all the drills after missing some practice time last week.

-- When the defense ran through nickel, the cornerbacks remained Marlon Humphrey and Anthony Averett. Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison were the first-group safeties with Minkah Fitzpatrick at Star.

-- With the second team, Tony Brown and freshman Aaron Robinson were the cornerbacks with Hootie Jones at safety and Shyheim Carter at Star. Holcombe and Mack Wilson were the middle linebackers.

-- Harrison had a nice one-handed catch on a pass when the safeties were warming up. It was good enough to get teammates hollering from other positional groups.

-- Players were in helmets/shoulder pads for the second practice of the day.
