Talk centered around quarterbacks following Alabama's first scrimmage

Quarterbacks, quarterbacks, quarterbacks. They held court as the topic of conversation on message boards Saturday afternoon during the University of Alabama football team’s first scrimmage.

They were also the subject of three of the seven questions UA head coach Nick Saban was asked following the scrimmage. How did he divide the repetitions among the quarterbacks? How has the true freshman Jalen Hurts developed during his eight months on campus? Did the quarterbacks make good decisions?

As to be expected, Saban wasn’t satisfied with where the quarterbacks are just nine days into fall camp, but if he were what would that say about his expectations? Likewise he wasn’t displeased either, praising all three quarterbacks who participated — Cooper Bateman, Blake Barnett and Jalen Hurts (David Cornwell was limited with an injury) — for their decision making.

Saban said all three quarterbacks got an “equal opportunity” to move the offense with each group (first team, second team, etc.). How each fared gave the coaching staff information they’ll use to help narrow the starting quarterback competition the longer it goes.

“I think it sort of gave us a good idea who might be most ready to manage the team, but I think that decision is far from getting made,” Saban said. “Just my feeling, based on watching the scrimmage today on the field. But, you know, I’ll watch the film and sort of see, get a better feeling for how many balls got dropped and did they throw it in the right place all the time. How did they execute? What was their decision-making? How did they manage the team? What was their leadership like? How did the team function when they were in there?

“I think when we watch the film we’ll get a little better feel for that.”

Normally quarterbacks statistics are withheld following scrimmages but Saturday no statistics from the scrimmage were released by UA media relations.

The team got through the day relatively unscathed except for a few minor injuries, including sophomore running back Bo Scarbrough, who got a “little dinged up,” and Dalvin Tomlinson, who sustained an ankle sprain. Junior defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand was held out of the scrimmage but Saban indicated he could be back at practice by Monday.

Asked specifically about true freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts, Saban said said he did “some really good things out there today.”

“I think he does really good things each and every day,” Saban said. “I think the key for both younger guys is consistency in performance, taking care of the ball and taking what the defense gives and being satisfied with that.

“I think that all three guys have done a good job of not looking over their shoulder in terms of what the other guy is doing and trying to focus on what they need to do to improve and get better. So, we’re encouraged by the progress. We’re not satisfied with where we are but we are certainly hopeful that we can get all three of these guys really to play well enough to play for us to give us the best chance to win.”

The team returns to the field Monday for a two-a-day practice.

SUTTLES: Saturday, Aug. 13 Practice Report

The team went through the warm-up period before today's scrimmage which begins at 1 p.m. Not much new to report right now, although Nick Saban should give us plenty of valuable updates in post-scrimmage press conference.

The offensive line was the same as it has been with Cam Robinson, Lester Cotton, Ross Pierscbacher, Bradley Bozeman and Jonah Williams with the ones.

I still think Cooper Bateman will take the first snap of the scrimmage with the ones today, but I continue to hold the belief that Jalen Hurts is the best quarterback on the roster. Does that mean he's the most game-ready quarterback at this point? No, because he's likely not. I've also heard great things about Blake Barnett and today is an extremely important scrimmage for him today. Also, if Cooper Bateman comes out today and moves the offense and doesn't turn the ball over he'll further entrench himself with the ones. I doubt we'll get quarterback statistics today.

I'm intrigued to see the running back statistics from today. As you've likely garnered from my story earlier this week, B.J. Emmons is turning heads. Anxious to see what he does today and if he gets any carries with the ones.

Would be interesting if Saban didn't release ANY stats... Usually we get at least a snapshot.
Saban didn't. I don't know how good of a snapshot we'd get as it was. A lot of situational work, ya know?

Hurts didn't have a great day passing, 1 for 4 I believe for a short gain. Cooper was 12 for 19 with one and one. I can't say how accurate those are.

There was mention of Griffith going 3 for 4 today.

Another observers stats:

-Hurts took an even amount of reps with 1's with both BB8 and Cooper Bateman
-Cornwell is still not healthy and did not get one single rep
-Now, some stats...Hurts had 3 TD's and one INT and looked great
-Bateman nor BB8 scored a TD
-Cooper threw a pick 6 in the scrimmage and Blake threw 2 INT's in 7v7
These did not include ANY red zone work

Watched most of the scrimmage today. Team looks loaded at so many positions with big fast players. The QB race seems to be Barnett or Hurts just based on overall ability. Bateman looked ok but just doesn't have the "it" factor like the young guys. I would think next Saturday's scrimmage will cut it down to 2 guys.
The last 2 recruiting classes have stocked the team with so many playmakers on both sides of the ball that the future looks incredible.
I was told that Hurts is making it hard to not play him this year. He can do it all and Saban really likes him.
OJ made a couple of great plays and looks like a pro. Emmons reminds me of Ingram and could be a big factor this year. Diggs played both sides of the ball and is a great player. Dieter sat out with a minor hamstring but it's not serious. Foster had a long touchdown catch from Hurts.
Griffith struggled a little missing a couple of FG's.
Overall team looks great!
RTR!

No freaking out here. Just a question I believe is legitimate based on his injury history. I hope he does play every game but I was specifically referencing Saban's "dinged up" comment from earlier today. I do believe, like TideStalker, that Harris and at least one of the freshmen will have to play a significant role this year in order to have a solid ground game. Whether or not that's because Bo's injured...I have no clue.

Cant wait for Bo to play every game... yall freak out over everything. He had cramps the first day and immediately we got the "omg Bo is already hurt crap!" freak outs. Its gonna be like this all year too.

This is what CrimsonBoz posted over on the Rant:

Bateman, made some nice plays, had two really bad picks, one was a pick six. Did ok on goal line, nothing great but did not look comfortable in the pocket and obviously was throwing them into heavy traffic for gifts

Barnett, also made some good plays had a nice td pass. Didn't use his legs at all and he isn't really all that fast which may surprise some of you. His speed in high school doesn't translate to this, had a bad pick he basically pulled a Chad Kelly but no helmet bounce.

Hurts was by far the best looking qb, he is electric, kid has wheels, is calm and collected in the pocket. He makes nice reads, he goes read 1 check to 2 and then runs so fluid. Shocked the absolute hell out of me. He threw a huge bomb to foster 50+, ran a read option 45 yards, and another td in the air.

1st D looked good, 2nd and 3rd team was mix matched so it was mostly 2nd guys in when people mentioned 3rd team and some 1st team. Secondary was totally mixed up a lot tons of personnel on and off. AA got the first look at corner.

Rueben Foster looked much quicker and Evans left the field he looked a little dizzy is the best way to say that

Shank took first team reps after Bozeman warmed up there and they switched out for 1st team reps . Mayden, shef and carter took a lot of reps as well

Harris and emmons looked good but Jacobs looked excellent kid is really quick. Bo was good for a limited time.

So bottom line I think the QB is still batemans to lose but hurts def passed BB. My opinion and that of everyone there is hurts is absolutely the real deal. This is def a qb competition it has to be. Hurts took the 1's and drove the field with absolute ease it was like 15 pass then 10 yard run back and forth. Looked great.
