Practice report: Final tuneup before 1st scrimmage

Alabama was back on the practice field Friday for its final tuneup before its first scrimmage, in what was its 11th fall-camp practice. The Crimson Tide practiced indoors and in shells on a rainy, 82-degree afternoon.

Here are several tidbits from the Crimson Tide’s Friday practice session in Tuscaloosa:

- Redshirt sophomore Marlon Humphrey fully participated in defensive back drills Friday during the one media viewing period. The third-year cornerback sat out of nickel drill in the team’s Thursday night practice session.

- Quarterback David Cornwell (foot) continues to be limited. He did, however, participate in the quarterback’s passing drills with wide receivers, throwing a couple of picture-perfect deep balls in the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.

- Transfer wide receiver Gehrig Dieter is the first player I’ve seen wearing a support apparatus on his hamstring in fall camp. Dieter wore it on his left hamstring, and although he ran routes, he needed to be stretched out.

- After being limited earlier in the week, linebacker Keith Holcombe and running back Joshua Jacobs are back to drills. Jacobs went through running back drills behind Bo Scarbrough, Damien Harris and B.J. Emmons.

- The offensive line has been consistent since the second practice of fall camp with, from left to right, Cam Robinson, Lester Cotton, Ross Pierschbacher, Bradley Bozeman and Jonah Williams making up the first group.

- Bradley Bozeman has received majority, if not all, of the first-team reps at right guard in place of last year’s starter Alphonse Taylor, who is currently suspended. Bozeman recently received some high praise from Nick Saban.

“Bradley Bozeman has done a really good job,” Saban said Wednesday evening. “I thought he had a really good spring. He’s a tough guy. He really understands. He can play center, guard or tackle for us, so we’re really pleased with the progress he’s made. He gives us a lot of depth at a lot of different positions.”

*** What’s next: Alabama will hold its first scrimmage of fall camp Saturday at 1 p.m. CT inside Bryant-Denny Stadium. It will be closed to the public. Saban will hold a post-scrimmage press conference around 3 p.m.

Previously little-used veteran making case for Alabama right guard job
Will this be Bradley time to stater for Bama this year?

Sure feels like he is being prepared to start game 1. Once Shank comes back, the waters will be muddied. Although I remember last camp they were giving Bozeman some 1st team reps in front of Shank, and he never started at Guard. I think that was more of a "motivational tactic" than anything. Shank has all the tools to dominate.

It's almost a guarantee that someone will miss multiple games on the line, it's great having an experienced guy who can play everything just in case.

-- David Cornwell continues to be slowed by a foot injury. He was off to the side throwing as the other three went through agility warm ups.

-- Watching the QBs throw, Jalen Hurts looks to have the most compact release. Tight spirals on every pass I saw. Blake Barnett has a strong arm with a longer throwing motion. (What Nick Saban said about that in the spring). Bateman doesn't seem to have quite the same zip on intermediate throws as the others.

-- Again, take this with a grain of salt, but freshman Joshua Jacobs was working third in line behind Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris. Fellow freshman B.J. Emmons was fourth.

-- Looking at the receivers in order, on one side it was Calvin Ridley, Derek Kief and Gehrig Dieter. On the other, it was ArDarius Stewart, Cam Sims and Xavian Marks.

-- Players were in shells (helmets and shoulder pads).

-- The first scrimmage of the season is Saturday in Bryant-Denny Stadium. It's closed to the public.

Alabama practice report: QB observations on eve of first scrimmage

Interesting that Jacobs was running ahead of Emmonds. Although I think the other report said the opposite. Either way, glad we got 2 good looking freshman. Going to need 1 to play at some point!

Pre Srcimmage report:

— Wide receiver Robert Foster has been wearing a harness on his right shoulder, the one he injured last season.

— Inside linebacker Keith Holcombe wasn't present during the media viewing period. Holcombe has only been present for media viewing periods two or three times during the last week or so.

— Bradley Bozeman continues to work with the first-team offensive line at right guard.

— Freshman Trevon Diggs was again at safety. He's been there the past several practices after beginning camp at wide receiver.

— The first pairing of wide receivers going through drills was Calvin Ridley and ArDarius Stewart. Derek Kief and Cam Sims were second. Gehrig Dieter and Foster were near the back of one of the lines. Don't read too much into that.

Live updates: Nick Saban reviews Alabama's first scrimmage

-- Saban said the team is tired at this point of the week.

-- The first teams looked good. The next group needs to battle through.

-- "We're a work in progress."

-- It poured rain early in the scrimmage and it affected the QBs, he said. It got better when the balls dried.

-- Penalties were an issue for a while with a full crew of officials.

-- With the QBs: Each of the three competing got plenty of action with each group. Saban said that decision "is far from getting made."

-- They want to watch the film to see more on the passers.

-- On Jalen Hurts: He did good things out there today. Consistency remains the biggest thing with two young QBs. They need to take what defense gives, etc. They're "encouraged, not satisfied" at this point.

-- Injuries: Dalvin Tomlinson twisted an ankle. Da'Shawn Hand was held out of today's scrimmage but they hope to have him back Monday. Saban also said there were a few minor concussions but nothing major.

-- Saban said there weren't many very poor decisions made by QBs, there were just some things in terms of efficiency that could have been better.

-- Saban said freshman Jonah Williams making progress, got bigger and is playing with confidence at right tackle.

-- Bo Scarbrough "got dinged" early on, didn't play much. B.J. Emmons is a naturally instinctive guy, has a lot to learn but is a hard worker.

Cant wait for Bo to play every game... yall freak out over everything. He had cramps the first day and immediately we got the "omg Bo is already hurt crap!" freak outs. Its gonna be like this all year too.

With the first day of class right around the corner, Alabama’s quarterback battle continued out on the field inside Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday as the Crimson Tide scrimmaged for the first time since fall camp started.

“I think it sort of gave us an idea who might be most ready to manage the team, but I think that decision is far from getting made,” coach Nick Saban said.

The only decision that seems to have been made since January is the elimination of David Cornwell from the competition due to a foot injury. Saban said everyone else got equal reps with the first team during the scrimmage.

Conditions weren’t ideal for the quarterbacks as rain poured down during the first part of the scrimmage and running back Bo Scarbrough suffered an injury that limited his participation on the field. However, Saban said the offense improved later in the scrimmage when skies cleared up.

Saban said he felt like there were not many poor decisions he saw the quarterbacks make that seemed especially bad, but he’d still like to see all of the guys, but especially true freshman Jalen Hurts and redshirt freshman Blake Barnett improve in that area going forward.

“Jalen is a very talented guy and I thought he did some really good things out there today,” he said. “...I think the key for both younger guys is consistency in performance, taking care of the football and taking what the defense gives and being satisfied with that.”

None of the quarterbacks have done enough to win the job yet, but Saban does like how all three are approaching the competition.

“I think all three guys have done a good job of not looking over their shoulder in terms of what the other guy is doing, but trying to focus what they need to do to improve and get better,” Saban said.

Saban still needs to see better decision making from quarterbacks following first fall scrimmage - The Crimson White
