August 8th, Practice Report:

From Aaron Suttles

It's a stormy day in Tuscaloosa but during the media portion of today's practice the team worked outside. Here is what stood out to me.

I'm kind of in awe of Terrell Hall. He doesn't look like a freshman (it truly is staggering how often I type that sentence). He's listed at 6-5, 247 pounds and he looks like Dae can go. He's behind a lot of talented players, but he's one to watch out for in future years.

The defensive linemen went through drills in the following order: Jonathan Allen, Dalvin Tomlinson, Da'Shawn Hand, Da'Ron Payne, Joshua Frazier, O.J. Smith, Johnny Dwight, Quinnen Williams, Raekwon Davis and Jamar King.

This walk-on tight end really stood out to me. Cam Stewart, a freshman from California listed at 6-8, 254 pounds. Guy made a few nice catches.

The first-team offensive line was the same it's been the last few days with Cam, Lester, Ross, Bradley and Jonah from left to right.

From Ben Jones
Tony Brown was lineup at safety with the second team (Anthony Averett and Shyheim Carter were the second-team corners). Jared Mayden and Aaron Robinson both lined up at corner. Nick Saban was very animated today.

Good news on Terrell Hall. Physically, he could be the best looking DE prospect Saban has signed.

That being said, isn't he taking snaps at OLB? Not too pumped about that, however with Evans moving to ILB and Williams/Anderson departing next season, he could be right in the mix next year. Just seems like he will put on some lbs and grow out of the speed rush that we've seen from our studs at that position. But maybe he stays around 260 and becomes a better ,,uch version of Hubbard. Hope so

I would be more than willing to take your QB combo, but I would prefer it reversed order. Only because I grew up listening to coach Bryant talk about freshmen. But it's a nice list.

I've got guesses, but nothing for sure. Bozeman had his work at RT yesterday.

Suttles report at the top of the page says the OL has been the same for a few days now with Williams at RT.

When I get a min I'll try to find some practice reports from today.

We really don't know what A. Taylor's deal is... But Bozeman is the safest bet if he's not playing.

Alabama practice report: Notes on secondary, LBs and O-line

— Inside linebacker Keith Holcombe wasn't on the field during the media viewing period. The first pairing of inside linebackers during drills was Reuben Foster and Shaun Dion Hamilton. With Holcombe not out there, the second group was Rashaan Evans and Keaton Anderson. The third pairing was Joshua McMillon and Ben Davis.

— The second pairing of outside linebackers during drills was Christian Miller and Anfernee Jennings. Mekhi Brown and Terrell Hall were the third group.

— Redshirt freshman cornerback Kendall Sheffield was working with the first-team secondary. It was Marlon Humphrey and Sheffield at cornerback, Minkah Fitzpatrick at nickel back and Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison at safety. The second-team secondary during drills consisted of Anthony Averett and Jared Mayden at cornerback, Shyheim Carter at nickel back and Hootie Jones and Tony Brown at safety.

— The first-team offensive line was the same it has been: Cam Robinson at left tackle, Lester Cotton at left guard, Ross Pierschbacher at center, Bradley Bozeman at right guard and Jonah Williams at right tackle. The second-team offensive line was Matt Womack at left tackle, Brandon Kennedy at left guard, J.C. Hassenaur at center, Alphonse Taylor at right guard and Korren Kirven at right tackle.

— Freshman Trevon Diggs was at safety. He has seen time at both safety and wide receiver early in camp. He was shadowing Eddie Jackson during different portions of the media viewing period.

Sounds about right :D

I just can't see Rashaan Evans not being on the field. I'm sure SDH does some great things, but it's only a matter of time.

Tuesday morning practice report, Suttles:

The team undergoes the first two-a-day of fall camp, as it worked in full pads this morning on a muggy Tuscaloosa morning. Here is what I noticed.

The inside linebackers worked in the following order: Reuben Foster, Shaun Dion Hamilton, Rashaan Evans, Keaton Anderson, Joshua McMillon, Ben Davis and Mack Wilson. I did not see Keith Holcombe on the practice field. That doesn't mean he wasn't out there, just that I didn't see him.

With the quarterbacks, David Cornwell again worked off by himself just throwing the football as he is slowed with a foot injury. Cooper Bateman continues to lead the group with Blake Barnett behind him followed by Jalen Hurts.

The wide receivers worked in the following order in one drill: Calvin Ridley, ArDarius Stewart, Xavian Marks, Gehrigh Deiter, Robert Foster, Derek Kief, Raheem Falkins and T.J. Simmons. Freshman Treyvon Diggs again worked with the safeties. I also didn't see Cam Sims, but I wasn't really searching for him and he could have simply been getting a drink of water.

Kendall Sheffield was working with the 1s at corner opposite Marlon Humphrey with Anthony Averett and Jared Mayden with the 2s at corner. Shyheim Carter also worked at both corner and safety.

Up next: Player interviews at noon followed by a 7:30 evening practice in shorts and shells.

Tuesday morning practice report, Jones:
  • Alphonse Taylor appears to have edged up in the world. He was working with the second team offensive line. Left to right it wasMatt Wommack, Dallas Warmack, JC Hassenauer, Alphonse Taylor and Korren Kirven.
  • Trevon Diggs worked at safety yesterday and today. Noticed it yesterday but wasn't sure if it was him or a walk-on. That's also probably a good indication of the overall depth at WR and at safety.
  • Looks like Marlon Humphrey and Minkah Fitzpatrick are the cornerbacks when there are 4 DBs on the field (Jackson/Harrison at safety) but they've slid Minkah back to nickel at times when they go to five DBs. Anthony Averett usually comes in at CB in those spots.
  • Kendall Sheffield got some run with the first team as well.
  • Nothing new with the QBs. Barnett and Bateman were in one group together. Cornwell and Hurts were the other pair.
  • Aaron and I were talking about the LBs, and there's a good chance this might be the fastest group Saban has ever had. Not necessarily the best, but the fastest. Especially when Rashaan Evans and Reuben Foster are both on the field, you've got a ton of speed out there. They're going to cover a lot of ground.

I would be SHOCKED if Foster doesn't hold down one of the receiver spots and even more shocked if Evans doesn't end up as the WILL (even if its sharring that designation with someone, Hamilton maybe?). Minkah is probably going to be the other corner opposite of Marlon as the starters and move to star in the nickel.

He has been working with the 1's this week. Bozeman has as well. Bozeman is one story I've found myself caught up in. At worst, he's the sixth man on the line. One thing that has caught my attention is he's not only flipping positions on the line this fall, he's also flipping coaches between Mario and Key.
Hell if I know, but I look forward to observing it.

[sidenote] Kiffin has someone in the Athletic Department designing tweets for him now. [/sidenote]

We've pretty well known that since spring, right? It's no secret that they were moving Evans to the inside, the question was who lines up with Foster in base and nickel. In the practice Saturday Evans was there all day. In the last two reports coming from the media periods, SDH was second in drill work (putting him with the 1's if history is an indicator.)

**In the practice Saturday the only consistent was Foster ... from base, all the way through the dime/rabbits package.

WR Foster. Again, why is everyone so quick to dismiss Stewart? It's an opinion, and I'm not saying it's a bad one. I am asking why?

Nickel: The only question left if who gets the nod at the opposite corner from Humph, right? I've maintained don't sleep on AA, everyone is seeing what potential there is in Sheffield, and I think it's safe to say hearing Mayden's name come up as often as it has ... well, can we call that one of the surprises of the fall?
