šŸˆ ex-Clemson QB Kelly Bryant's transfers to Missouri

Interesting to see perspectives on this topic, some are ok with Dabo making the decision, but not ok with Kelly making a decision. Both are doing what they believe to be the best decision...

I think sitting down with Kelly after his 4th game and laying your cards on the table is the right way to go about it. Kelly might see it as a slap in the face that he's going to most likely lose the starting job... who wouldn't... but isn't it better for Dabo to tell him after the 4th game, rather than waiting until the 6th game? Again, Dabo could have easily strung Kelly along for one more game and had 2 QBs to play with all year long which would have been best for the team, but he instead seems to have laid his cards on the table and let Kelly decide next what is best for him to do.

Agree, can't fault a player for doing what's best for him if the coach is gonna do what's best for the team. Hell, coaches leave programs all the time, schemes change with coaching changes causing players to get the short end of the stick.

I will almost always take the side of the player.

I hate he waited his turn and put in all of that offseason work and this happens. Not like he was ineffective and even Dabo said he didn't do anything wrong. I can easily see how this stings and seems like a lot just thrown out the window for Bryant. Think of the extra work he'll need to put in at another school to learn that offense, earn a team's respect, and get used to new coaches, staff, atmosphere, and academics. Major change for these guys that decide to transfer.

Dabo messed this one up, royally. First, you have zero depth, so you just can't lose anyone. Lawrence is a true freshman, so patience is not a problem. In short, he just ain't leaving. The reps that were exercised against Georgia Tech would have easily worked for the remainder of their regular season schedule. I repeat this Clemson schedule doesn't have a top 25 team on it. This is where Dabo dropped the ball, big time. By giving Lawrence half the snaps in basically the rest of the schedule, he is locked and loaded for the playoff and you still have your depth going in. Think about it, with these candy teams facing Clemson they were both going to get half the snaps anyway. He just felt he earned the start as a senior who waited for his turn. Dabo missed the opportunity to placate them both and not put the team in jeopardy.

This is not the way I would have played it, but this is the way I'm kinda glad it played out.

So it begins now! It will be interesting to see what schools will be affected from here on out. We saw some bail at the Barn, but only 1 starter to date that was a contributor. Supposedly, 2 more were talked into staying and were immediately rewarded with snaps last weekend.
Numbers were quite similar for Bryant and Lawrence when it came to yardage production. The difference was in point production with Lawrence leading 15 point producing drives to Bryants 8. I feel for Bryant and for any other kid that has patiently bided his time and paid his dues, but at the same time, it is about winning and giving your team the best chance to win. Dabo and every other coach is faced with the task of winning or be fired, not play everyone because they have been there and put in their time.

It's the new normal. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this start happening at Georgia beginning next year with all the five stars Kirby has been stockpiling and promising playing time to.

You recall it happened at UGA last year but Kirby didn't have to make the decision to bench his starter due to the kid got hurt right off the bat in game #1. Easy Button decision on that change....not so easy on this next deal.

How many of you bashed BB8 when he left? How many of you praised Jalen when he stayed? I don't think the leaving is an issue. It's when and how it's done. BB8 and Kelly Bryant walked out on their teammates.
Hell Coach Bryant had 5 All American high school QB on his rosters in the 60's and 70's but they didn't pack the suitcases and leave if they didn't get the start. This is society....the Easy Button Crowd. Then again I am just old but with that said to hell with them.

I see both sides and if Lawrence goes down, having a good backup quarterback isn't important till you need one. I disagree with Bryant's comments though. It was his job to lose and he lost it. As for waiting his turn, heck a lot of players would have been waiting their turn behind Deshaun Watson, so it's not like it he did anything extraordinary by waiting his turn.

I don't think OP was replying to you, Matt, but what he's saying fits there as well.

While it's true coaches leave each season, you don't find them leaving after four games in the season because they see a better coaching job at another school.

I do believe the rule needs to be tweaked a bit. IE: If a player is planning on transferring, there should be a date/deadline for the decision to be made.

Dabo elected to give Kelly a chance to play a year at new gig when he could have played the kid along for a couple of more games by starting him and then sending in his new guy. It could hurt the team if the new QB were to be injured but again he gave Bryant a chance to walk away with a year to play. I am giving Dabo credit for that. If Bryant gets into a NFL game like me he will buy a ticket.

I am not going to argue the value of a scholarship in this reply. Other than the value of scholarship the system has long been tilted in the favor of the institutions and the NCAA. We are now seeing more "rules" being enacted that begin to tilt in the favor of the individual athlete. I cannot understand why people are mad at the kid for following a rule that allows him to possibly go somewhere else and play for 1 more year. I have 0 problem with him moving on. I would almost guarantee that his team mates have no issue with him moving on. I would have no problem with Hurts leaving to play somewhere else. I had no problem with BB leaving other than his sour grapes interviews and shots at CNS after leaving. I think the new rule very fairly rewards athletes who have knuckled down and finished their degree early with the ability to move on and perhaps have more of an impact and enjoy their time without having to sit out for a year. If there was a loophole added to their contract that allowed coaches and/or universities a free do-over after 4 games... They'd be doing it!

Think FSU wouldn't like to red shirt ole' boy right about now?! lol

For those calling him a quitter, if he redshirts this year and stays at Clemson, is he still a quitter? If he just wants to play one more year as the starting QB, what does it matter?

The sad thing is that 2015 and 2016 count against his eligibility...
