Report: Clemson QB Kelly Bryant misses second straight practice after losing starting job

Swinney said Tuesday that he hopes Bryant stays, but understands if he looks out for his own best interest.

"If he walked in here today and said, 'Hey coach, I don't want to play the rest of the year unless you've got to have me,' OK. If that's what you want to do, I'm all for it because I love Kelly," Swinney said. " I would be disappointed in that because we need him, but I wouldn't judge him for that."

I wrote almost this same thing on another thread, but Dabo did not handle this situation the best if you ask me. Bryant was the only reason Clemson won in College Station. I think Dabo allowed the outsiders make his decision for him. Lawrence has been decent, but showed his Freshman maturity when he had issues against A&M. Bryant hasn't been off the charts, but he's been steady. Saban and Curbee have handled their respective battles correctly and all four guys have been having good seasons.

Depends on your point of view. If Daba saw the writing on the wall that Kelly would lose the starting spot at some point down the road, he did the kid a favor by doing it before he played his 5th game. Kelly may not see it that way, but I would suggest that Dabo is doing the kid a huge favor... He could have easily kept things the status quo and gradually moved the FR into the starting roll by game 6 or 7 and benched Kelly as a great option for backup, but leaving Kelly no options for next year.

My guess is that is the conversation he had with Kelly on Monday to explain where he saw this going and to give Kelly the option to do what he needed to do for his future. If this is the case, I think he handled it very well.

if there were personal issues, i can understand that. but leaving just because you lost the starting job? be a man, earn it back.

if i were a coach at another school, i'd look at that as quitting when it got hard.

I'm with Bryant. He waited his turn, did nothing wrong, saved Dabo's ass in College Station, and then gets benched. Lawrence by far has a higher ceiling, but he has not showed anything to warrant benching Bryant. He torched Georgia Tech and Furman, but who hasn't. Their stats aren't very far off from one another. Dabo has now lost a five star and three four stars in the last year at the quarterback position? Maybe he is doing Bryant a favor, but Bryant saw it as a "slap in the face" and I have to agree.

The difference with Hurts is that he was replaced last season after being ineffective and had an entire offseason to show he was progressing. Lawrence was at Clemson in January, so he had the Spring to show his stuff, and Bryant was still named starter. Lawrence was ineffective against the only decent team they have played this year and Bryant showed his maturity by leading Clemson to a victory. It just doesn't seem right to me, but I'm sure there will be a thousand differing opinions on the topic. Dabo better hope Lawrence can handle the pressure, because they have no one to back him up now. All Freshmen at the position if I read their depth chart correctly.

Generally I agree, and do in this case, but there are cases where you flat know you ahve been beaten for the job and will not get it back but know there are other places where you would start. Happens all the time in non-sports situations where someone gets demoted and/or wants a promotion, doesn't get it, and then applies elsewhere for that same job and gets it.

Generally I agree, and do in this case, but there are cases where you flat know you ahve been beaten for the job and will not get it back but know there are other places where you would start. Warmack and Kennedy are testaments to this. Both starting at new schools, until Kennedy got hurt, but Warmack is doing well.

I feel for Bryant and for any other kid that has patiently bided his time and paid his dues, but at the same time, it is about winning and giving your team the best chance to win. Dabo and every other coach is faced with the task of winning or be fired, not play everyone because they have been there and put in their time.

It's the new normal. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this start happening at Georgia beginning next year with all the five stars Kirby has been stockpiling and promising playing time to.

I think sitting down with Kelly after his 4th game and laying your cards on the table is the right way to go about it. Kelly might see it as a slap in the face that he's going to most likely lose the starting job... who wouldn't... but isn't it better for Dabo to tell him after the 4th game, rather than waiting until the 6th game? Again, Dabo could have easily strung Kelly along for one more game and had 2 QBs to play with all year long which would have been best for the team, but he instead seems to have laid his cards on the table and let Kelly decide next what is best for him to do.

I see both sides. The players side, feeling he has done all asked of him and wanting to play and the coach that feels he has to do what is best for his team. It will be interesting to see how coaches approach this from here on out into the future. Will they sit guys down after the season and discuss in detail all options, string guys along through 4 games, etc. I wouldn't want that task.
