| FTBL ESPN article on FSU - "'They're in a deep, deep hole': Inside the 6-year unraveling of Florida State football."

This is a LONG read. It's worth taking the five to ten minutes out of your day. A few things really pop out in the article.

Many recruits struggled with Trickett's approach; among the 19 offensive linemen signed between 2013 and 2017, just one went on to be drafted in the NFL, while nearly half didn't finish their careers at Florida State.

Is there any wonder why Landon Dickerson chose to transfer? Over the past few years when we've had discussions about Fisher and what A&M might do a few of us have always pointed to FSU: specifically the lack of development of the players he'd recruited. It wasn't just limited to the line as the article goes on to spell out.
It doesn't confirm one things some have speculated about, others have sworn by: Fisher's egotistical approach wrote checks his coaching acumen simply couldn't cash.

There's another point here I've seen a few bring up on occasion. We've seen people talk about the money Alabama continues to spend on the football program. As suggested, if that stops the program will decline likely to the point we see at FSU. When Clemson was building and spending FSU was trying to maintain the program success on the same type of budget that worked in the 1990's. Clemson was opening their football facility while Fisher was begging for money. They spent their way to the top of the ACC. It's certainly not the only reason for the Tigers success but it definitely is the foundation.

(We're seeing that at A&M right now. They're spending to build the foundation but don't have the leadership in place to take advantage.)

"Deep, deep hole?" Oh yeah. It's F.U.B.A.R. in Tallahassee.

It's like the cold war with the Soviet Union. America had the money to keep spending on defense year after year. USSR tried but failed to keep up and eventually folded. In the modern world of football it really is all about the benjamins. That's why you see the same teams in the playoffs year after year. Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Florida, and Ohio St have nearly unlimited funds and this is reflected in recruiting and wins.

but nobody has more $$$ than Texas. And few states have better talent pool. And flagship program in state.

So. Its more than just $$$! But seriously dont know what's holding Texas back

A culture of big egos. I imagine the important administrators and boosters involved at UT Austin are like a bunch of Jerry Jones type of people.

These shitheads want the football team to be ran in their image so they hire some nice guy schmuck like Charlie Strong or Todd Herman and give him advice on how to run his team. In a lot of ways its kind of like what you saw at Alabama in the post Bryant era of the 1980s and 90s.

And in regard to FSU, I have to say their downfall is quite shocking. I remember roughly 8-9 years ago how Alabama fans were paranoid as shit when it came to Jimbo Fisher when he started luring in recruits from within the state of Alabama. They really did seem like they had something special brewing down there.

They were like Guns N Roses. They burned bright for about 4 to 5 years, and then just imploded.

yeah. Istill think back on the post bear years
Perkins was one on Bears choices. Not a bad choice either. Great recruiter. But a complete ass
Curry was school prez choice. Ok but not bama man
Stallings. Awesome choice. AD ran him off. Bad AD
The rest til NS were as you described. And program was out of control with coaches n boosters.
we owe a lot to the Sabans. And Stallings

A tell tale sign of a bad culture at a program is when a successful coach gets ran off by some hothead higher up as we saw with Gene Stallings at Alabama or even Jimmy Johnson at Dallas.

An interesting note on Ray Perkins. Him going to Alabama in 1983 opened the door for the Giants to promote Bill Parcells to the head coaching position.

I’ve been surprised the last decade at how Clemson has been able to keep up in the arms race. Aka the funding for such infrastructure. A few years back when a study came out showing athletic budgets for the schools they were far from some of the elites, but this article (and their facilities prove it) show they were spending significantly to enhance their program.

Long read but it was a good one!!!! F$U ain't the "blue blood" that they believe themselves to be!!
Agree with this. FSU does not have the athletic longevity needed to create lots of deep pocketed boosters that are committed to supporting the program. Can't keep going to the same well over and over. Need to spread the pain. The real blue bloods have this kind of booster support to keep it going during the difficult times.

This may not be correct but my perception of Florida is similar but they probably have a somewhat healthier booster system than FSU.
