I actually agree with Josh on this. Bobo is one heck of an OC and if anything... Saban was same way with offense. It had to be approved by Saban. Not lot of freedom to go outside the scope they've established.

Kirby does have a small issue with offensive identity. He believe defense will take care of itself and offense shouldn't have to do a lot.

I'd take any of the OC's criticized in Saban's tenure over Bobo. There isn't anything he's done that makes me look twice when considering is offenses.

Early on, in that 'era,' he and Richt made a good pair of coaches. Still there.

a good play caller/schemer is important, but to me the most important offensive coach is the Oline coach. Your offense typically goes the way the oline plays regardless of who the OC is... just saying.

Their biggest issue, IMO, is they've really misfired on QB recruiting/management (and maybe even development to an extent). They've had 2 really good, not great, QB's under Smart since he's been there. Go back to when he got there... started off with Eason. Then Fromm (had Fields too but he bolted), then Stetson Bennett (with Mathis and Daniels mixed in), then Beck, and now Stockton. That's a level of QB talent that reads more like something you'd see in a 10 year run at South Carolina, not UGA. They haven't even matched the Aaron Murray and Matthew Stafford peaks of the later Richt years... why is that? There's no excuse for a team that recruits as well as they do. Saban eventually figured it out and got QB’s that were consistently 1st round worthy. Can Kirby get to that point? I don’t know. I do think it is in many ways connected to his OC hires though.

To me, there seemed to be a "break away" from UGA football back in the last few years of Richt. It's fits with what you are saying here: something I've wondered about for awhile. With all of the local talent found in high school ranks for running backs, why did UGA move away from that as their "calling card?"

Follow along with me here for a second:

In '13 Richt had Gurley (with Aaron) and Bobo as the OC. Solid offense; for that era. Richt and crew hosted UofSC early on that season and won: a Steve Spurrier coached UofSC team. UGA finished third in the east behind Spurrier's 'Cocks and Mizzou. Spurrier. Richt.

'14 was weird (in a Bama sense.) Friend was their running game CO, Pruitt was hired for their defense. They still had Gurley but now they are to Mason? (Finished second behind Mizzou passing the ball that season.)

'15 and Schott is in Athens and he's got Chubb and Michel. A third place finish in the east again. All with Brice Ramsey?

A decade has passed. When you think about UGA's running game, does it make you pause? In an effort to keep up with SOS, Mizzou, and the like did UGA throw out their bread and butter?

Georgia hasn't had a true receiver threat since AJ Green. Bowers was amazing, but still a tight end. You saw what a dynamic play maker can do for them as he was the major reason they even won those two Natty's. Georgia has recruited the box extremely well and that's where they have won, in the trenches. As far as their skill players, they get one or two a cycle, but that's not enough to dominate. Alabama simply used to kill folks. We won recruiting in the box as well as skilled guys, so it was an overall dominance. Georgia just wears teams down and wins big late. Alabama used to whip your ass from opening kick to the final whistle. Those are the differences I see.
