The first of what could be many national and conference honors for DeVonta Smith came Sunday morning.
The Alabama junior receiver was named Walter Camp Football Foundation offensive player of the week after his record-breaking performance.
Smith claimed Alabama records for touchdown receptions with five (old record was three) and receiving yards with 274. That old record was 224. The five touchdowns also tied the SEC record held by a host of receivers.
Smith is the 15th from Alabama to win this honor since 2004. He’s the third receiver to do so, joining Christian Jones (2013) and Amari Cooper (2014).
The Amite, Louisiana product scored four straight touchdowns for Alabama as it scored 38 straight points to blow out Ole Miss, 59-31.
Smith now leads the team in receiving yards with 537 and his eight receiving touchdowns rank second in the nation.
