Ricky Town is a verbal for the class of '15—still leaves the team with five on scholarship.

FWIW, LSU will be carrying five going into the fall. UGA likely to be carrying six. I'd have to look to be sure, but I'm thinking UF is carrying six right now as well.

Think about this for a second. I mentioned Pennington earlier. UF, just this season, found themselves playing with their third string QB due to injury. If he'd gotten hurt? What then?

In an ideal world you redshirt your QB in his first year and then he's got four to play four. Bring in one each season and you're left with five on scholarship. An injury here, a guy leaving after his Jr. year there...and suddenly you're down to three.

That's not even mentioning the number of QB's recruited that don't pan out at this level. A few weeks ago I mentioned Spurrier has had nine come through the UofSC program that didn't pan out.

A good number of people I trust thought he was the front runner to take the starting position next season if Sims couldn't produce the passing threat needed. He certainly spent a lot of time working on his game with AJ and the staff.

Luke came with the idea he'd be able to work his way on scholarship. I don't know if that's the bottom line in this situation thought I believe it's likely a major part.

In the end we'll have another guy to watch the next few years who isn't wearing Crimson.

Didn't Luke say he was excited about Kiffin? I heard something like that. If true, pretty odd for him to transfer to OSU only a couple weeks after saying he's excited about the offense.

I don't know where the notion comes from that just because a kids parents make millions in one calendar year that spending 50K for a years education isn't a big deal to them. Especially when he could have a free ride.

That said, "This can't be all about a $36,000 scholarship..."

That's why I said, "I don't know if that's the bottom line in this situation though I believe it's likely a major part." I know Luke wanted one. It's pretty clear to me there's a question as to where it would come from even with my bad math on scholarship numbers.

I really haven't tried to find out what's happening with our QB situation going into '14. No matter who anyone talks to it's all speculation at this point.

Luke's moving on...so be it, ya know? What's the point of trying to find out all the specifics as to why outside of morbid curiosity?

The only major thing that's happened at UA in the last week is Saban having his annual meeting with players. I'm speculating about the scholarship not being available...it does pass my logic test.

He's off to Oregon State.

Shortly after he learned he was eligible to play in 2014, Oregon State quarterback Luke Del Rio opened up a bit about his year at Alabama.

In a Friday interview with The Oregonian, Del Rio, the former Alabama walk-on whom Nick Saban often said was Alabama's third option behind AJ McCarron and Blake Sims, said he was told he would have played if McCarron got hurt.

Del Rio also said Alabama coaches told him he would be put on scholarship after his first season, but ultimately wasn't.

"(Saban) said, 'We’re not ready to make that commitment yet from a business perspective,'" Del Rio told The Oregonian. "He said if he had the numbers, then he would have done it. And I respected that.
"But I sort of saw the writing on the wall, and I left. I didn’t know who would still be interested."

Del Rio's departure left Alabama with five scholarship quarterbacks this spring. Florida State transfer Jacob Coker will make it six when he joins in the summer.

Ricky Town, a southern California kid, pulls his commitment shortly after the Kiffin hire is announced. Now that could have happened just because Sarkisian is a great recruiter, or it could be on account of some dislike for Kiffin. We will never know.

Luke Del Rio's dad would be familiar with Lane from NFL days. A week after his sit down with Kiffin to discuss the new offense he is gone.

Other factors could have affected both young men's decisions, but it does make me wonder.

I guess not willing to make that business decision pretty much entitles these guys to some pay. If Coach Saban is basing things like this on "business" than the NCAA is pretty much forced to pay these guys since the terminology is making it all more of a business atmosphere instead of an amateur one.

i'm not a proponent of paying players other than their scholarships, but that's an amateur status type deal to me. Making "business decisions" based on players comes across as employment, so therefor you need to compensate these guys based off that.
