🏈 Del Rio transferring...(UPDATED: Del Rio comments on reasons he transferred, etc.)

I guess not willing to make that business decision pretty much entitles these guys to some pay. If Coach Saban is basing things like this on "business" than the NCAA is pretty much forced to pay these guys since the terminology is making it all more of a business atmosphere instead of an amateur one.

i'm not a proponent of paying players other than their scholarships, but that's an amateur status type deal to me. Making "business decisions" based on players comes across as employment, so therefor you need to compensate these guys based off that.

Not a mind reader of CNS, but I really think that the business decision was whether to give Luke a scholarship or give it to someone else, considering the 85 limit.

All of this was pre-Coker as well...something he was likely taking into account if the stories of the staff knowing he was headed here are true—which I suspect they were.

I understand that. Just by the way it sounds though, it comes across as more of a promotion type deal, which we see as employees. Not necessarily a second or first string type deal, but one of more pay essentially with giving a scholarship or not offering it (atleast $30,000 a year on the cheap end). If the guy was supposedly third string, he should have a scholarship. I say you either trim down the rosters so everyone can play on scholarship or allow them to offer scholarships to everyone that suits up and has a locker. I don't see how increasing scholarships would be an unfair advantage for bigger programs, because a team like ours still wouldn't sign everyone and there are still only 22 starting positions and playing time issues. No team in this country uses anywhere close to 85 players, and I'd actually like to see statistics on how many players get to actually play throughout the year, even mop up duty. Now some positions may be more thin than others, but that's just something you'll have to think about while building your roster. The sooner we get past this issue of scholarships, the quicker we can get past the issue of paying and compensating players. It's also a way to keep these kind of players straddling the line from losing eligibility and having to start over at another school.
