I had big problems with algebra 1, and my teacher. Finally got a good teacher in summer school who taught me the value of knowing the rules of algebra. After that, it became much easier.

Mental crutches, with me at least.

I sucked, as in I was BAD, at ALG 1 (passed, but with a C.) My teacher allowed calculators for ALG 2. I aced that one. Looking back nothing was really different other than that little TI. What was really weird is I didn't need it for Geometrical problems/courses. That just came to me like it was innate.
