💬 An off week, off topic BS thread. Do you call the credit card holder? Call the place you bought something from? Do you NOT call anyone, at all?

Most of the time they're good for decent food, moderately priced drinks and some great stories/ lies. Hit them pretty regularly on our travels.
The way Charleston's area is divided up by water you tend to stay in your area. I know all of those guys from the years I was in the bar business.

The guy that runs the kitchen there stopped by the Pub every day for ...geez, eight years? We closed. He's been there (VFW) since I got into the Grill in '07 Jack with pineapple was/is his drink. Three, then he left. Every day.

Great felt.

And then you have my mom that bought something from Walmart, in store using her debit card, and got charged twice. She didn't know it at first until the bank called her and inquired about the identical charge. So she called Walmart immediately after. Their response? "Oh you must've bought that stuff twice."

"Why would I need to buy it twice?! On a different purchase?! If I wanted 2 of everything, I'd just get it all at the same time during 1 purchase!"

Then they said, "Well you must've accidentally scanned everything twice."

"ME?! I didn't use self-checkout! (she HATES self-checkout btw and refuses to use it) I went through a normal checkout lane and watched the girl ring everything up ONCE! If she'd scanned everything twice I would've noticed that my total was way off. (she only bought like 3 small things)

"Well, we don't know what happened. We'll just wait and see if it falls off and go from there."

Mom was NOT happy with that answer.

Turns out, someone was somehow scanning things again and my mom was the only person who called to ask about the double charge. That person got fired, too. And Walmart refunded the money, as well. Because I can tell you her next phone call would've been to her attorney. It didn't matter that it was only a few dollars.

I've had my issues with them on occasion. They've been easily corrected. I don't go in the actual store. I haven't been in Walmart in several years. I use their shipping and delivery services.

That's contracted out to a company called Sparks. Every contact I've had with them has been started with, "I know it isn't you. I know it isn't Walmart. It's the delivery company. Here's the problem."

It happened with AAA batteries this week. They put them in my mailbox instead of putting them at my front door. Just a lazy delivery driver. It ticked me off. I told them about it and they sent a second pack. Now I have 48 AAA batteries...good lord.

Which is actually illegal. The USPS is the only organization allowed to put stuff in a mailbox.

Oh. I know. That was my point from the get go. "...not only violated federal law but left it at the street? I just wanted the batteries on my porch like you always do."

Do you get your produce from Walmart?
No. I get that from farmers markets. There's a thread here, somewhere, where I talked about how many there are around here. It's seven days a week. Some, like the festivals you and your wife have attended.

I got fresh pears yesterday from the market in Summerville. I'm going to use those in some oven baked pork ribs this weekend.

Here's my point with the W+. Look around your kitchen, just to start. I'm not talking food. Trash bags, soap, paper towels, a bag of sugar, a bag of flour...toilet tissue, bleach, laundry detergent, a freakin' spark plug for the mower...

$100 a year and it's at your doorstep. You just have to click.

A big bag of dog food...a case of water...you don't have to lift anything anymore.

Those bolded are Costco purchases for me. And I'm going to Costco for myriad other things, from food to clothing to motor oil.

There may come a day where I can't/don't want to lift things. I'm not there yet.

What about milk and butter, yogurt (walmart doesn't carry my type), cheese, cream or creamer? Do you have someone pull those for you? When I'm at walmart, I see folks meandering, picking for delivery. I see the picking carts lined up at the front of the store, sitting. If I've ordered milk, it's gonna sit out a whole lot longer than it would if I bought it and took it home.

Convenience? Nah, I work out near the Walmart, I can bounce in and get the staples we get from there, saving us a good bit over grabbing those when I'm wandering the Publix aisles, pulling my BOGO's.

That's the one thing I love about the local Piggly Wiggly. All of those items are within 20 yards of the front door. Where you would normally see something like Customer Service, it's dairy. It's a five minute stop. Same with breads...that's 20 to the right. '

The funny thing about some of these is they are same price at Family Dollar: less than a mile from the house. They don't carry eggs. I've used more than a dozen in the last two days.

I buy all that at Costco. Cost me $120/year for my membership. But I get 2% back at the end of the year which usually pays for my membership. Yes, I have to drive there and get it myself. But I don't mind that. I also get the larger/bulk sizes so I don't have to go as much as I would if I bought them at a grocery store like Publix (which I still go to for other things that Costco doesn't carry).

And you still have to lift it. You have to pick it up to bring it in the house.

Also, I can't stand Walmart so I don't give them my money.

I wish Tuscaloosa would get a Costco... there have been rumblings for a while now that a Costco may get built on that old McFarlans Mall property right off the interstate... but nothing has ever come from it (yet).

My experience with WM delivery has been limited, but not great. [👀 looks at the pack of canned dog food on the table that he received instead of ant killer he ordered] Mostly though I use it for my mom, if she needs something from there, I can have it delivered to her house without her having to get out if she doesn't feel well. But they've screwed those handful of orders up too, including once never showing up with the stuff.

But like Tim, I hit the sales at Publix right down the street and just shop in person at WM early in the am when it's empty for all the other stuff (mixed in with occasional trips to Aldi, Piggly Wiggly, Fresh Market, and Sam's).

I get that. But I also look at it like this. Glad trash bags are the same at Walmart as they are at Costco. As mentioned, it's the expendables like meats that are the outlier.

Call me lazy. Call me a geek. Or, call me smart. I mentioned the Glad bags because I was out in my mud room getting one earlier this morning and realized I'm down to two. A new box will be here today. It was a few clicks on my phone.

Cash back does come into play. I put this grocery charge on the Discover because I'd paid the other cards off for that month and they aren't due until the 1st. It was lazy; just wanted to pay one bill instead of two (avoiding interest.) NOW, Discover does give 5% in the 1st quarter on home improvement purchases; clubs like Costco. In the 2nd it's groceries so from April through June all food goes on Discover.

There are two bottom lines here in my view. One, like you, I hate going into Walmart. I hate going into any store EXCEPT hardware stores, bait shops, etc. And two, it's too convenient.

OH, let's say three. For Costco, I'd have to go on the other side of the Ashley River. I don't want to drive there. It's a pain in the ass. I will...but only to go to a place to eat. This is Costco in the upper left of the image...that intersection is )(Y()&()E*R&)(*&ER bad...

Hrmm...just noticed after positing that church is paying for ad space through Google...wild, to me. Understandable, with that area.

The green roof ... nice golf shop.
