| LIFE CV-19: Effects on life, work, and sports

A pretty good article that looks at national responses to COVID around the world, and who has done different things well. I think it makes it clear there are multiple variables involved in combatting the disease. Geography certainly helps, too. Being an island country, one that has relatively few international travelers, or one that has dealt with terrible pandemics recently (like Ebola). Testing, quarantining, economic helps, m@sks, they all factor in.

Being an island country,

Biggest one I have seen is the ability to shut your borders. Taiwan closed theirs to China at the time we were being told that was racist to even think of. New Zealand gets lauded for closing theirs but we were being told trying to do anything like that was illegal. Hell, we had New York screaming that stopping travel out of that state when it was out of control there was an act of war then turning around a month or two later and basically blocking travel from all over.

Yep, and, although not an island, South Korea's sole border is perhaps the most heavily guarded in the world.

Love him or hate him, he knows some stuff. I personally don't much care for him.
I saw and heard about the Johns Hopkins report in Sept. on yearly deaths as I
asked in a post from Sat. (I think). Here is a link to Infowars, Alex Jones is going
over the overall death numbers from 2020 and from several years past, from CDC report.

Everyone wants to so believe there's a conspiracy and no one is really dying. And there are merchants of chaos aching to feed them the narrative they want.

No one is dying from COVID.
The Nashville RV explosion was really a missile strike.
Trump is poised to arrest those cannibalistic pedophiles.

Damn, people. Chill, I need ammo and toilet paper.

Been a real study in human behavior for sure. I did not realize how easily people will believe things w/o data to back it. All it has to do is align with their ideologies and it must be true. This is not unique to a particular political party.

Where I have an issue. Big retailers don't appear to have capacity requirements, where restaurants, bars, etc have to follow these.

I get that people need to be able to buy groceries, but businesses need to stay open to prevent owners from going bankrupt and employees employed.

We all have bills to pay.

Meanwhile positive test case numbers are still increasing. But nothing is happening to the grocery stores, Costco, Sam's, home depot's, etc?

Said from day one the biggest tragedy from this may be the economic impact on peoples lives. I do not make that statement to minimize those that have died from the virus.

With that said the economy has held up stronger than I thought. I had in mind historic unemployment #'s for long periods of time and with people standing in lines to get Government provided food. Things are still really bad for a lot of people and especially small businesses.

National Debt was accelerating pre-COVID, and it's been exploding since. That's softened the blow, along with some sectors thriving because of the changes in how many are living their lives.

Many small businesses received SBA loans without payments for a year. The damage will be making payments from future profits if they recover, but there is going to be many bankrupt businesses when the payments start. This has been a great false sense of security for helping a business for lost revenue. Government deciding who wins and who loses is a terrible future for all of us. We are in a basic business to business of telecommunications and our revenues are down 50 % for 2020. There is a shortage of new business startups. I hope the new year will improve.

I thought those loans were forgiven if they went to pay your employees? Which I thought were the main reason behind the stimulus efforts.

It depends on the program. The PPP loans are forgivable, but some other emergency lending programs simply have delayed repayment terms, like a portion of EIDL proceeds, or perhaps the Main Street Program - not as familiar with it.

The PPP loan is forgiven fully if you received less than 50 thousand. The SBA loan has to be paid back. For many companies I know it is just going to delay their bankruptcy. Many of those are restaurants that couldn't adapt to takeout. Getting a loan that ends up being a burden for many years sucks.

He will have another week to get ready more than likely. Ohio State is now saying they have covid issues. Probably just an excuse to let Fields recover but you know they will get an extra week if they want it.

I mean, it would be unbelievable if they get another week due to the virus after all of the other breaks they have gotten this season. I would demand to know what their protocols are like and why they are so much more susceptible than our guys that haven't really been affected yet.

A big chunk of our team got it in late spring and summer.

As for moving the game, enough rules have been bent already to allow Ohio State to detour their way into the playoffs. Who is to say if they postpone it a week, that things will be any better then? This is Alabama/LSU all over again. Alabama wants to play. The SEC will have Alabama's back. If this game is postponed, it's going to be a fight to get it done, and it may get ugly behind the scenes.

And LOL...
