TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama men’s basketball team will be playing its holiday tournament early this year, heading to the Charleston Classic for the first time beginning Thursday.

The Crimson Tide (2-0) will open against Northeastern (1 p.m., CT, ESPNU) in TD Arena on the campus of the College of Charleston. The field is highlightedby five NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago,and two teams ranked in the latest AP Top 25, No. 16 Virginia Tech and No. 23 Purdue.

Each team will play three games, on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The championship game is set for Sunday at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

1] The tournament will be a sort of homecoming for junior forward Tevin Mack, who transferred to Alabama from Texas but is originally from Columbia, S.C. ā€œI’m going to have a lot of family there,ā€ he said. ā€œI’m going to have to get everyone tickets … it’s my first time playing collegiately in my home state back home. It’s going to be exciting.ā€

2] Coming off an ankle injury, junior guard Dazon Ingram estimated that he’s at 80 percent phyiscally. The injury occurred when he came down on the foot of freshman guard Kira Lewis Jr. during practice. He played 21 minutes during Alabama’s 81-73 victory against Appalachian State on Sunday. ā€œAt first I had some jitters because I hadn’t played in a real game yet this year,ā€ he said.

3] A year ago Alabama was the fourth-youngest team in Division I and didn’t have a senior on the roster. Now it has the second-youngest player in NCAA Division I with Kira, who is only 17. He went from six points and seven assists against Southern to 21 points vs. Appalachian State. ā€œI think the eye-opening moment was when we started practice officially,ā€ coach Avery Johnson said about the freshman’s adjustment. ā€œHe got knocked down a couple of times, and the physicality of playing against a Dazon Ingram, or even though A.J. Jr. isn’t that tall he’s a pretty stocky guy.ā€

4] Northeastern (1-1) is similar to Alabama’s last opponent, Appalachian State, in that it has a veteran roster with nearly everyone returning. ā€œVery, very, very experienced, clever guards,ā€ Johnson said. ā€œThey know how to play the game.ā€ Jordan Roland is the leading scorer, averaging 21.0 points, and Vasa Pusica has 4.5 assists per game.

5] If Alabama wins, it could have a rematch with Virginia Tech from last year’s NCAA Tournament on Friday morning (10 a.m. CT). It could be an important barometer of the team’s progress without Collin Sexton, who is now in the NBA. The Crimson Tide won 86-83 when Sexton scored 21 of his team-high 24 points in the second half (six field goals and 10 of 14 free throws). The game featured 10 lead changes and never saw either club go ahead by more than seven points. The Huskies play Ball State on Thursday.

Five things to know about Alabama basketball at the Charleston Classic - Bama Central

Well looks like it could be a long year. We were just beat'n in every phase of the game.
Can't shoot, guard or rebound. Giddens is a wasted scholarship. Only bright spot is K. Lewis can be really good he is only 17 years old.

Was at Appy State game last Sunday...if it wasnt for home cooking ....wouldnt have beat them.... shot like 44 free throws and made like 8....
Why cant our players shoot ... and today was awful... it really is painful...lol
And no motion at all...standing around... nice hair-doos though...

This stuff keeps up it won't be that hard to figure out. A good coach can always coach effort and there was little of that today,

Our Bball program...going to look like Tennessee s football program...start overs
I reall like Avery...and liked Mark....

Pulled up the stat tracker on my iPad to follow while I was working. Slammed the iPad down and broke the screen!! It amazes me at just how bad kids can suck at shooting the basketball. Damn!!!

Dang @UAgrad93 ...its just basketball...lol

50+ It goes back to my days as a coach. I coached for 13 years and basketball was just one of my sports. I used to drill and drill fundamentals, line them up and shoot FTs over and over. I charted them as well. We would then lose a game by 3 shooting 5-17 from the FT line!! I coached to win, not have a good time. Damn at the headaches I used to get!!
When I chose to get out, my BP went down and the headaches stopped!!

@UAgrad93,
Dang @UAgrad93 ...its just basketball...lol

It was just an exhibition game but good lord, an ugly exhibition.
Should we go ahead and unbuckle?
If you choose. You can't buckle back up again.

I hope a lot of fans don't continue to embarrass themselves. The very same people I saw complaining about CAJ not having a set rotation last season were complaining about him starting the same five through three games this year. I swear it's as if a lot don't know what is going to, who to blame, so they see one remark from someone and that's where they hang their hat.
