BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ā The University of Alabama swept the 2013 Southeastern Conference Womenās Golf Awards, which were announced Monday.
Mic Potter was named the SEC Coach of the Year, Stephanie Meadow ā the 2013 SEC individual medalist ā was named both the SEC Golfer of the Year and the SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, while Emma Talley was named the SEC Freshman of the Year. This marks the first time in SEC history that a team has swept each of the four SEC Womenās Golf Awards.
Meadow became the first person in Alabama school history to win SEC individual medalist honors, shooting an even-par 216 to win the 2013 SEC Championships by nine strokes. Meadow posted rounds of 75, 69 and 72 to capture top honors and earn her sixth career victory, which extends an Alabama school record. Meadow leads the nation with a scoring average of 71.50 and has shot par or better in 16 of her 26 rounds. She is the first woman in Alabama history to be named SEC Golfer of the Year.
Meadow also earned SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors, becoming just the third athlete in SEC history to be named both Golfer of the Year and Scholar-Athlete in the same year. Meadow joins Tennesseeās Violeta Retamoza (2005) and Arkansasā Stacy Lewis (2008) as the only student-athletes to accomplish that feat. She currently holds a 4.0 grade point average in accounting and has been on the Deanās List at Alabama each semester of her collegiate career. She also is active in the community with Project Angel Tree, Read Across America and the YMCA, among other activities.
Talley became the third golfer in Alabama history to be named SEC Freshman of the Year. She finished 19th overall at the SEC Womenās Golf Championship with a 15-over-par 231. Over the course of the season, Talley has compiled a 73.23 average and shot par or better in 12 of her 26 rounds this year.
Potter earned his fifth career SEC Coach of the Year honor after directing his Crimson Tide to the 2013 SEC Womenās Golf Championship with a 14-stroke victory. Potter has earned at least a share of the SEC Coach of the Year honor in each of the last four seasons. The win was Alabamaās second all-time league crown. The Crimson Tide have won six tournaments this season as a team, breaking the school-record mark of five set in the 2010-11 campaign.
