🏈 CB Geno Smith arrested for DUI last night

Yup that's a sure way to get into Saban's dog house.

Well, that sux for a number of reasons, most importantly is that he's starting a record for himself that he can never escape. He needs to clean it up now. I saw a kid near my neighborhood going through the motions with a police officer last night. Public records aren't worth the trouble they'll cause later on.

I was really hoping Smith would crack the starting line up and beat out Belue. I think Smith is a smarter player, and I don't recall seeing Smith get burned as much as I did last year. Of course, that could be due to a number of other circumstances too.

On subject: Off the top of my head this is the first I've heard of Geno having any issues with the law. OR, I've forgotten?

If it's a "simple DUI," I strongly suspect there are mandatory suspensions in place for first offense. I can't recall a kid being arrested for DUI since Saban has been here, have you?

Gotcha. Yea I agree its a bone-headed move this close to the start of the season. Don't get me wrong I'm no saint but I also never played at the collegiate level nor got a free ride.

In the wake of all the pay college athlete talk, this is another reason why it wouldn't work. Imagine NFL-like fines being issued to offending players. Doesn't matter if its team rules or breaking the law fines would be issued. You think players could afford such or have their pay-to-play cards revoked?

I know they are both from the Atlanta area, guess they were tight. That's a shame. Certainly no excuse for a DUI, but it may be a contributing factor.

Hopefully Smith can get the help he needs and get his life back on track. He is lucky nobody else got hurt.

Regarding his friend, De'Antre Turman:

Sounds like a weird thing .. Routine tackle, and a broken neck. Thoughts and prayers go out to Tre Tre's family and friends.

I understand wanting to drown your sorrows, but you're taking other peoples lives in your hands not just yours when you get behind the wheel of a car. A simple call to a number of teammates likely would have been all he needed to get home with no problems.

Trying not to get too down on him, we all have made mistakes and I'm still relatively young (25) so I'm sure I got plenty more to make myself. Things like that are just simply not things you should play around with.

I don't know that you do understand. I don't. I can't despite experience with situations like this.

The fact it's a football injury eliminates me from being able to say "this is how he should have reacted." Add to that a friend, team mate...yeah, it's getting beyond understanding with me and getting into futile attempts to empathize.

FWIW, I didn't post those tweets as a reason or explanation—merely as a point of context as more details emerge.

I didn't think thats what you did, but it is a fair point to make that he was probably drowning his sorrows on a pretty messed up situation. THAT part is understandable, getting behind the wheel of a car isn't understandable at all no matter who you are.

Terry, from what I can remember (granted, I don't study game film, cover practices, et al), Smith got some great PT for a freshman and did pretty well. I remember seeing Belue making some mistakes we didn't think he'd make.

Now, I agree with Philly that Smith will be out for a few games. Does this mean we'll have a better chance of seeing Bradley Sylve?

Smith really only got serious playing time after Fulton went down... Belue did make mistakes but he settled in as the year progressed and he was a first year starter so I wouldnt expect him to be an All American right off the bat.

I agree, and I apologize if I gave a different impression. I am really looking forward to seeing him smother a few receivers this year.
