Charlie Strong and the University of Texas have agreed to terms on Strong becoming the next Longhorns head coach. A high-ranking Texas official said Strong agreed to a five-year contract worth about $5 million per season.

Strong comes to Texas from Louisville where he's led the Cardinals to a 37-16 record and bowl wins over Miami and Florida in back-to-back seasons. Strong was Urban Meyer's defensive coordinator at Florida before taking over at Louisville five seasons ago.

1. Curious to hear what Old Timer would think of this hire.

2. Would Strong be the first ever African-American head coach of the Texas football program?

Im not not going to lie. I wanted Saban. A lot of Texas fans did too. However, I am thrilled with this hire. It isn't official yet, but I think it's just a process of formalities at this point.

Charlie Strong doesn't fit the old guard and probably not the best yes man for the old money club, but that is actually more than ok with me. We have a problem at Texas, and it's deeper than just soft football. The culture of arrogance and entitlement is pervasive in the Athletic Dept. The flagship sports program, football, needed a guy who did not fit the old mold. This hire was as much about changing the attitude and mindset of the football program as it was about finding a championship caliber coach. Charlie Strong is the man that can change the culture at Texas. I think he is poised to do some great things as the new HC at Texas.

How ironic is this quote coming from the same person that spent two months telling anyone that would listen (and those that wouldnt) that Texas can and will buy anything and anyone they want... Unbelievable.

Anyway, I say all that to say this, you will get someone other than Nick Saban as your next football coach and you'll like it.

 Nostradamus

I'm not saying he won't stand up against the old guard, but I will say there's no track record of him doing so.

That's a question left to be answered.

Here I am back on this thread again. :shake:

You guys know how much I dislike the term "sources." There are so many instances where the term is used too loosely; or used in situations where it's simply a drummed up term.

This keeps hitting me as...well, strange?

Charlie Strong and the University of Texas have agreed in principle to terms on Strong becoming the next Longhorns head coach. Strong has not formally accepted the job, but he's indicated to Texas officials that he'll be their next coach, according to a high-ranking Texas official.

What's a "high-ranking official?" And, how do you know if this "high-ranking official" actually knows what's going on considering how many "high-ranking officials" have given conflicting information about their coaching search?

Was Hicks considered a "high-ranking official" despite having no official capacity within the TX football organization?

Is "high ranking official" now replacing "high level source?"

Yes, I'm finding this perversely entertaining. I do find the term "insider" inappropriate. I'm led to believe it should be "official."

Won't surprise me if they are looking for a new coach in 5 years.

The first time I can recall hearing/running across Strong's name was back in the mid 80's? It may be in the late 80's. He showed up in Gainesville, had a one year stint in Oxford, then back to Gainesville. To say the least I've followed him, casually, throughout his climb through the coaching ranks.

His coaching ability really isn't my question. What's required at TX does raise my eyebrows.

How many TV shows a week will he be required to film? I believe it's three?

My point is...a mix of Strong and the LHN gives me a mental picture of Jim Lehrer and PBS meet football.

Just visited BurntOrangeNation to see what they had posted about Charlie Strong.

This is the result...
