A day after saying he was unsure if redshirt freshman quarterback
Blake Barnett was still with the University of Alabama football program, UA coach Nick Saban confirmed Barnett's departure Thursday evening.
āWe received word this afternoon that Blake Barnett has officially withdrawn from school and is no longer with our program. The quarterback position is a very unique position where only one player can play. We are very disappointed any time a player leaves the program who feels he can compete for a starting position elsewhere, rather than here at Alabama. We wish Blake the very best of luck in the future.ā
Barnett started the first game of the season against Southern Cal and played the first three series of the game before
Jalen Hurts got an opportunity, one the true freshman never relinquished.
Barnett, from Corona, Calif,. is exploring a transfer to a junior college in his home state, The Tuscaloosa News has learned. He played in three of four games on the season and was 11 of 19 for 219 yards and two touchdowns.
With Barnett's departure it leaves the Crimson Tide with Hurts, Cooper Bateman and David Cornwell on the roster. Alec Morris transferred to North Texas following the Crimson Tide's 2015 championship run.
Alabama has two quarterbacks verbally committed for the class of 2017 in Tua Tagovailoa and Mac Jones.
