Or was there a little smoke blown up our rears? The front seven was hell on the run, no doubt, but the passing is still a concern and getting off of the field is still suspect. I have no doubt that we will get much, much better. The talent is there.

Seems like business as usual. Really good D but not mind blowing. The talent is on the roster to be special, but the 3d down thing is and has been troubling for a while now.

I realize that it's the first game, all I'm saying is that they were billed as " could be the best ever". There are on 2 ways to go Improvement or replacement. I can see the potential, so I believe they will improve.

He's also the guy that said Coker was having a good last week or so in practice. I don't mind busting balls when called for but you also have to give credit where it is due.

Coker looked like a different QB last night than he had in any previous game action to me. He was making quicker decisions and putting the ball in much better places for the receivers. Doesn't mean he didn't look like he had for a year and a half straight just a few weeks ago.

it was a decent showing for an opening game against a top 20 (that remains to be seen, as well) opponent.

as has been stated, d-line did good against the run. but our secondary is where we need the work. obviously Coach Saban knows this and will definitely get it fixed. i'm looking for that to happen within 2 weeks time for the sec opener.

It seems we have different opinions about Coker's performance last year and at A-Day. Luckily for both of us, that argument means nothing considering how well he played last night and hopefully going forward will continue to play.

I think you saw our strategy change defensively at the half. We played a lot of zone while playing base, trying to guard against the run. Stave had success dinking and dunking with a long pass of maybe 15-18 yards right before the half. The 2nd half, we locked up more man and pinned our ears back and limited the QB to maybe 70 yards and about 9 completions. I feel extremely confident against the UGAs, Arkys, and LSUs that want to play smashmouth. It remains to be seen how we will play on the back end against spread teams.

I agree entirely. The new look in the secondary, going to guys with good coverage skills at the safeties, as opposed to safeties whose strength is run support, is designed to improve our performance against hurry up, spread type teams. Going a little leaner on the down linemen is also aimed at this. The Ole Miss game will be our first true test against this type of team.

LSU has had more defensive success versus the spread in recent years than we have. They have relied on smaller, quicker linemen and linebackers than we have played, and have gotten around being unable to substitute by using fewer specialized packages and leaving the same group out there. I don't think we are ready to go completely in that direction, but with the defensive roster we now have, at least we can approach it when we need to.

Though the defense is VERY VERY STOUT on run defense. As of now isn't even close to the best defense ever at Bama. Especially the 92 defense.
